Hi everyone I just thought I would post this picture of the cake my 12 year old neice made this weekend. This was the first time she has shown any intrest in cake decorating. She asked if I would show her how to make a rose. I showed her once and said ok I got it. She also had me drive her to WM so that she could pick out the cake she wanted. She let me turn the oven on (those were her words). She did most of the work herself. I was watching over her shoulder as she made the icing. She let me put a layer of BC but she smooth it out her self using the via paper towel with the fondant smoother. Go figure this 12 yo is out for my job. LOL. I thought I would attach the pictures of the cake. MC

Great Job! If she keeps it up, by the time she turns 18, a lot of people in your area will be out of a job. The guy I learned cake decorating from started decorating cakes when he was 10. He now owns his own store and teaches several classes a year.

WOW, she did such a wonderful job!!! My 12 year thought cake decorating was interesting and asked me to show her how to do a few things, when she didn't get it perfect right off the bat, she decided it wasn't for her! icon_lol.gif I told her she just needed to practice.....she decided she like drawing better, which she does so well and has won several school and county fair awards for. Tell your niece, she has a gift!

That's wonderful! I love that she was not held back by what each tip was supposed to be used for and just did what made her happy. That is the sign of a well-adjusted person!

I had to post a reply to this, what a great job she did. I have an 11 year old daughter who wanted to give it a try yesterday. I was making apple blossoms for a cake and had extra icing. Well she did one and left the room, my 9 year old son gave it a try and sat and made me 25 apple blossoms, he just loved it. I think he is gonna be the one working with me from now on! He is the one who baked my strawberry cake a few weeks back. Tell her to keep up the good work thumbs_up.gif

She did a great job! I was just about that age when I started decorating cakes. I don't even want to think about how long ago that was now. icon_eek.gif

WOW, beautiful roses!! LOL here she is making beautiful cakes right off the top of her head and we have to get on CC to get an idea.. LOL that is tooooooo cute!
I too have a daughter and a niece who are very eager to learn. My niece comes over every chance she gets and says " did you do a cake this week?" I would say yes, she would say " have any icing left over that I can practice with?". And of course I say YES! she enjoys just making designs on parchment paper. I really need to let her practice on cakes. Maybe next year she can make her own cake for her birthday! Wonderful Job " Niece"!!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

Your neice has the nack for decorating!!! Loved her cake!!!

Isn't it such a blessing when our kids are interested in decorating!!! My 15 yr old daughter took the 1st Wilton Course w/ me. She had no problem figuring the rose out on the 1st week. It took me till the last 15 min. of the last week to get it!!!! Our instructor was very pleased w/ the people who took the courses w/ us. There were 4 teenage girls taking the class! She said she had never seen so many teenagers taking her class before! She was very excited too! My daughter didn't take 2 & 3 w/ me but I have taught her a lot of techniques. She is also my helper in the kitchen when I'm baking. She helps w/ that & helps color the BCI for me. I am so thrilled when she is in the kitchen w/ me. We sing songs & share stories. We have a blast!!
