I'm using luster dust for the first time and have been reading some info on the forums. When I bought it the store owner said that I should just lightly brush it on with a fluffy paintbrush. But it's a pearl/violet colour...will it show up or should I brush fondant with vanilla first and then lightly brush on the dust.

Also...is it edible? I'm not sure what's in this particular colour but I'm going to a baby shower with this cake and don't want people to get sick from it!!!!!

Any reponse would be appreciated!!

I would suggest to use Vodka as this drys faster...

You can do it one of two ways you can dust dry or you can pour a bit of vodka in a shot glass and get your brush wet and squeeze off the extra vodka and pour some of the dust out on to a paper plate and then dip your brush to that and brush it on or you can get you some of them paint by number containers and put a bit of the dust in there and a bit of vodka and shake it up and then brush it on that way..

How ever you choose to use this dust I would suggest you wear a mask as this dust is not good for your lungs. You will find this dust gets every where when you use it mainly when you use it dry.

It will not make people sick, it is non-toxic, but here in America we have a stick in our collective rears about labeling things and approving them through miles of red tape, and this wonderful little product has not gone through the mill here yet. Famous cake decorators use it all the time, so you will be just fine!! I always mix mine with vodka and paint it on, makes it look much more vivid. If you brush it on while dry it will just be more subtle. If you brush it on to a wet surface my thought it that it will simply clump up in spots and not look nice, but I do not know from experience, that is just my deductive reasoning coming into play. If someone knows better, by all means, please correct my ill asumptions!! icon_wink.gif

Did you get the violet pearl luster dust? You really won't see any violet in it no matter if you dust it or paint it. I learned that lesson early on... The others have given you great info as well.

Hey Missy... so it's pointless to get the violet pearl dust? I was just going to order some today and I was going to get super pearl and vioelt pearl because I figured it would have a nice violet sheen to it. Should I skip it? Thanks for the heads up!! Can always count on you!

I just bought some pearl dust the other day. So, let me get this all figured out. You actually mix vodka and the dust together in something and then paint it on? And could I use an alcohol based extract instead of the vodka? Also, is this method, dust, ect... limited to fondant only? Thanks you all!

I have used the pearl violet on cakes that had purple color on them. It just gave the cake a shine with a hint of violet. When I did some with just the pearl dust it was just a shine no hint of violet. I liked the first way best. So I bought all the pearls with colors and use accordingly. I like the dry dust for going all over the cake. I like to paint with a liquid when it is just for highlights or in certain areas not all over. HTH It can be used on BC and RI as a dust not wet.

Yes on the mixing and yes on the extract. I just use Vodka because it evaporates (dries) faster and leaves no alcohol or taste behind. And you can do this on buttercream if you have a really light touch. See the quilted gift cake in my photos with the gold diamond shapes, that was done on BC with luster dust and vodka.

Thanks you all! Your gift box cake was really neat. I didn't realize you could do all that with the dust. Your pumpkin cakes are so cute too! I'll have to try that dust some more. I only used it on accenting some peach roses. I couldn't decide if it looked right or not. Since it was almost 3.50 for a little thing of it I'll just save it for when I know it looks right.

You think $3.50 is bad???? Try $11!!!!!!!!!!! Where I live in Canada there is only one store that carries it so I had to buy a little jar for $11. Next time I'm going to order it on the internet!!

Krisi....I'm in Canada too and I'm with you!! I have only 1 store (Michaels) that I can purchase from and foolishly I did. I bought the Wilton set of 3 (gold silver & pearl) dusts. VERY exspensive and I really wasn't overly impressed with what they did. I am very new at this and I could have done it all wrong. I tried it three different ways, dry on dry, mixing with vodka and wetting first then apply dry. The gold was the only one that showed up somewhat. I was very disapointed with them. I see on here all the time about these dusts but they just aren't available here.
I find shipping costs and exchange rates to be very prohibitive when ordering on line.

I didn't know they had them at Micheals! I should check...I actually heard that they don't have them there so I didn't bother. I didn't even think of shipping charges either for the interent...hmmm. Well seeing that I live in Kingsville (30 minutes from Windsor(border city)) I can easily go to the states and pick some up. I guess I have that advantage!!!

I paid $11.00 also for my Gold lustre dust a few years ago...that was before I discovered ebay and other online stores. It really isn't that bad if you consider the cost of gas nowadays and driving. The $7.00 shipping doesn't seem that bad.It costs me that to start up my SUV nad drive to go get it!!Check around..there are a few online stores that have reasonable shipping rates.www.paylesscakedecor.com has great prices and good shipping.

The one Michael's sell isn't Luster Dust. it is shimmer dust. They are both 2 different itmes. You either have to get it online or a cake decorating store. I love the Luster Dust. I mix mone with rum or vodka and then put it on the cake to paint.

I don't think what they have at Michels is the true lustre dust--I think it's Wilton's shimmer dust or something like that. At least the Michaels in this area don't carry it that I have seen----
