I passed my sanitary inspection and in about 15 days will be legal as a wholesale bakery in the state of OHIO. (I need to show them the label first for the products, and they have to see me bake something first to see my sanitations practices while working) Just thought I'd update you all on everything, thanks CC -Melissa

thanks everyone, I'm so tired that everything is a blur right now. I couldn't get licensed in MI because I can't afford to add on a kitchen icon_wink.gif But I'm close to the OH line and that's where the church I belong to is located, so I asked the deacons if it was possible to use the church kitchen and they said YES! I could hardly believe it and it's all went fast from there. I'm just doing this as a very small business to hopefully earn money for school and then grow bigger down the road once I have more time (and skills-lol) I hope to have a business booming like those on here one day, but one step at a time right now. Just starting out very slow and hopefully will get my name out there soon enough, once I think of one icon_confused.gif Anyways, thank you all and for those who want to start a business I recommend to talk to a church about using there kitchen possibly for that to happen. Happy Baking! Melissa

Congratulations, Melissa!! I been thinking about it, but I just don't know-for 1 thing, I really don't have the money, but I have thought about asking my church-I'm sure they would let me. I just keep thinking-what if I'm hit with all these cake orders right from the start and am up to my ears? But it takes time to build a business, right? Not trying to scare you-sorry. God will bless you and your business-especially in the church-keep Him first and everything will be great!! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

thanks everyone, it's just now starting to sink in a little bit so I'm still kind of in this weird haze. Cassie 2500, just GO for it. It's costing me $30 for the license in Ohio, but they are really cheap. I'm not worried about massive orders because most people in my area are cheap and on top of that where I live the economy is doing pretty bad. Going through the church is a big$$$$ saver since I can't rent out anywhere or do it from my home kitchen. I'm bringing in my supplies there and then taking them with me when I leave since this is ok to do, that way I don't really have to buy too much. The good thing is if you are too busy you can always say no (although I admit that would be hard to do) you never know till you try, just give it a shot!

Melissa, how do you know what the laws are? I know they have a Secretary of State link website here on CC, but I couldn't make heads or tails of it. How would I get someone to inspect the kitchen? I really don't know where to begin.

I just basically called the town hall and asked and was bounced from one place to another phone call wise till finally after a few days the right ones called me back. For me those people where: the OHIO DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE --- DIVISION OF FOOD SAFETY. It can be different per county or town so I would first call a town hall or something like that and then be prepared to get bounced around a lot.

Very good news, congratulations. California is a state where it is nearly impossible to do home baking legally unless you build a separate building. The restrictions make it too difficult to do it legally and so most only sell by word of mouth to people they know.

actually I'm not doing it from home because in MI you can not do it from a home kitchen unless it is a seperate one off of your house. I live close to the ohio/michigan state line and the church I belong to is in OH. I askes the deacons about it and they said I could use the church kitchen to run a business through since I live in Michigan and it is impossible right now for me to become legal here, good thing I live close to Ohio where the church kitchen is located. I'm licensed as a wholesale bakery, which in the state of OH means I can make the items in the church kitchen but they can not be sold through it. It all has to be delivered off site to the person or establishment. Thanks again for the well wishes!

Congratulations Melissa! You have given me many ideas - even more than I had before!! lol

Suppliers and how much to cost is always in my mind too. I have never thought of using another facilities kitchen like that. I always think I am in the same boat as you - can't afford to rent or build...but want to be legal.

Best of luck and keep us posted!
