Ok, yesterday I took my 3 daughters out for our, newly instituted, once a month "girly day". On the schedule for the day was, lunch and a movie.

We decided on IHOP for lunch. I love IHOP, and so do my girls, because they can have breakfast anytime of the day, and they serve a descent regular menu as well. But I will never eat at our local one again.......here's why:

We were just past the appetizer's that we had ordered and our entree's finally arrived. About 5 minutes into it we hear this from across the restaurant, coming from the kitchen:

"Hey could you do this one over for me? This one has a big glob of hair in it!"

EWWWWW!!!!! And icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif

That obviously was the end of our meal!!!!! At the counter I relayed what we had heard back to the attendant, and told him that perhaps in the future, they may want to do two things; first, not talk so loud in the kitchen that they can be heard by the customers, and second; WEAR HAIR NETS!!! Afterall, it's the law!!

Gross, Gross, Gross!!!!

icon_redface.gif This icon always looks like he's about to vomit to me, so I think it's appropriate

At LEAST you didn't hear him say, "Hey, can you pick this big glob of hair out of this one?" At LEAST they made it over. Small comfort, though. Yuck.

i used to work in the food prep industry and although i didnt wear a hair net i had long hair so i put it in a tight bun and covered with a hat. by law you DO have to cover your hair with something.

I just cannot understand why it is so hard sometimes to get employees to wear hats or the mere fact of getting them to understand it's not about making a fashion statement, it's about following the freak'n LAW..

I can handle it if they don't have a hat, but they've got their hair tied tightly back. But the example mentioned here, yea, I hope that they comp'd the meal...

But... I'll take that over when I go to the grocery store and they have baggers... It used to be that meat was wrapped tightly in individual paper wrapped packages by the guys in the meat dept. and they would do an extra layer if it was something juicy... Now the plastic wraps aren't that water proof either... There is NO hand washing sink located up front at 99.9999% of all grocery stores that have baggers, and they're going directly from touching the raw chicken package to the fresh vegetables without washing their hands, wearing gloves, etc. Why do we get the stack of regulations about hand washing and gloves when the grocery store baggers don't (I think that's WORSE than finding a hair in my food!!!)..

They didn't even offer to comp the meal.....and I paid over $56.00 for it!! Dang! I should have insisted on that! Didn't think of it at the time, I was too disgusted to I guess.

Did I mention it was at IHOP???? Hopefully it was just that one, but a word out in the public couldn't hurt eh?

And yeah, they should at least have hand wipes or sanitizer for the baggers....your right about that!! They do for the carts in some stores here now. Fred Meyers anyway...they should everywhere!

Don't you put all of your produce in bags? With the exception of cantaloupes and other large melons, I put all of my fruits & veggies in bags. The cashier's hands and the conveyor belt are also sources of potential cross-contamination from raw meats.

What's really funny is that sometimes a guest will be over at my house and will see me washing the produce with water and a drop of Dawn dish soap...and their eyes practically bug out because they only rinse their produce with water before eating it - if they do even that. I'm much more concerned about the butthole countries where so much of our produce is imported from, where they poop in the fields and can't drink their own country's water. Handwashing isn't even on the radar. tapedshut.gif

And the fact that some of those countries use pesticides that we have sold them because they were banned by the FDA. Then we buy the produce back from them. Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it?

i am concerned about the way you reffered to other countries that may not be as fortunate as yours or others....for you to have reffered to them as butthole isnt very nice at all. its not their fault and they have to live there. maybe next time you could choose your words a bit more carefully.

I have heard on those investigative tv shows that most 24/7 resturaunts like IHOP or Denny's have the lowest health ratings. I'd have called the health dept. Fortunately, our county keeps close track of our resturaunts and they publish the results in the newspaper. thumbs_up.gif

I'm kinda freaky about public door handles, shopping carts and REALLY freaky about public bathrooms. I'd much rather pee behind a tree (where no one can see my big hiney, of course) than in a nasty bathroom.

PS I wash my produce with soap, water, and one of those plastic meshy scrubby things too. There's no telling how many hands they've been through. Oh, and I wash the tops of my canned food before I open them. I'm not anal. I just don't like stranger's cooties. icon_biggrin.gif

So sorry to have offended you. Please amend my original post to strike the word "butthole" and replace it with "underdeveloped." You may wish to note that I was referring to the COUNTRY and not its citizens. You may further extrapolate that the derogatory term "BUTTHOLE" was actually referring to the GOVERNMENT running those countries and again, not its citizens.

But that's a whole 'nother subject. Seriously, relax. Don't be so quick to be offended.

LOL, it's all good. I got a big chuckle out of your message. Could be partially because I've been nipping at the flavored vodka that's supposed to be reserved for my airbrush... I'm sorry, I understand what you're saying, but when you read the message literally...it just made me laugh. icon_wink.gif

How is pooping in the fields really any worse than spreading animal poop in the field? People manure is no worse than animal and both can make you sick if you ingest it (that's why hamburger has to be cooked so well in case the perforate the bowels) Farmers in our country use manure all the time and people working in the fields often don't take the time to wash their hands no matter what country the live in (it's a little hard when you don't have running water close).

Well there are some obvious differences. One main thing is that human waste can contain diseases that are transmitable. You don't have that worry with manure from animals. E-coli is always a possiblity, but the careful consumer can avoid that.

I don't care what the contamination, it has no place in the places that we trust to prepare meals that we pay for and hope to enjoy. Especially when it is in a setting that I was in. If you're out with your girls(my DD's) for a "Girly day", you don't want to worry about if your meal will be fit to eat or not!!

Shame on any restaurant that doesn't treat the food they prepare for others, as though they are preparing a meal for their own families. If everyone acted that way(in a good way I mean) then wouldn't the world be a better place for it?

*I'll take my "Rose colored glasses" off now........*

I use cow and horse manure in my garden and as long as you compost it, it's ok. Otherwise, the gases in it will "burn" up your garden. I think any manure (human or animal) is ok as long as it's treated somehow. There's a sewer plant about 20 miles from us that gives away "free fertilizer". icon_eek.gif It's been treated, cooked, etc but still gross to me. thumbsdown.gif I hear of people going there and getting truckloads for their gardens and they have volunteer tomatoes coming up all over the place (tomato seeds don't digest). icon_eek.gificon_confused.gificon_surprised.gif

I think the ecoli comes from any animal pooping on something we eat.
OK. This is getting grosser by the minute. How did we get to pooping on our food?

Where's the icon for gag?

That is just gross! You know...the person that you spoke to may not have the authority to comp. or give you a discount on your next meal...call to speak with a manager. You could still get somewhere! Sorry your girly day out was ruined! Everyone should at least have their hair tied back!

(p.s. did anyone ever think that the guy cooks back there shout sometimes cause they are messing with us?! Just funny to think of! LOL)

I have worked in the food industry for 22 years and I have seen really gross stuff. From managers pulling buns out of the garbage that mice have feasted on, to cooks stomping on a slim jim at a big boys to make it slim. And I have had bad experiences dining too. I think the worst was finding a cigarette butt in my half eaten chinese food and having the owner blame me to get a free meal. However at the time I smoked Marlboro and the paper I found in my food said Carlton. Point is you never know what you are getting when you eat out, it's not necessarily the franchise or the restaurant, it is the people they employ!

We have eaten from one end of the country to the other. Being a previous restaurant owner and a current bakery owner, I am, unfortunately focused on the food in any situation. I have seen some of the worst food handling and food violations. My DH used to hate to go out to eat because I would always see something, however, over the course of years he has come to the other side. We have elected to eat very little outside the home. I have a friend whose friend I just did a funeral for. Her son contracted a bacteria from a "Cloud" pre-packaged sandwich. Her son, 40, died from the brain swelling that the bacteria caused. It scares me to think of the processed foods and for that matter any foods prepared by the human hands. With the cutbacks in labor, FDA with more work then they can handle, food sanitation depts overloaded and upper management just there for the paycheck, training is lacking and corporate just interested in profit, which means more stuff from China and other countries that is going to be a nightmare to monitor. With the possibility of beef that may be coming from China soon, our once highly monitored facilities in this country will be out bid by the cheap beef and certainly cheap labor. If the Chinese can get by with the lead paint in our childrens toys, what will they add to the beef? I am sorry, but it is all getting out of hand. I guess you either raise your own, don't eat beef or know for certain where it came from. We keep hearing about salmonilla, botulism more and more.
