How Much Does A Layer Of Cake Weigh?
Decorating By TractorDiva Updated 16 Aug 2007 , 12:35pm by LittleLinda
I am designing a punching bag cake for a 18th birthday. I want to suspend it (a la cake challenge)-- I have the holder designed...but am trying to find out how much a layer of cake weighs...so I can determine what materials to use as my hanging apparatus and counter balance.
I figure: 6 inch layers, approximately enough to go 1 ft high (so like 6 - 8 cakes), filled with (I don't know yet) and covered in BC (have not learned fondant yet). I'll add in the weight of the icing, the platform/board and the hardware...just am unsure about the cake layers themselves.
My only alternative is to bake up samples this weekend and weigh them...but I just thought I'd ask in case anyone knows off the top of their head...
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
Sorry, I've never weighed a cake. Bake a portion of it, weigh it, and multiply. It sounds like a cute idea. Please post a pic when done.

Depends on the recipe and the size of the layer.
Totally depends on the recipe and the type of cake.
It's the age old question: How much does "a cup" weigh? Depends on if it's a cup of feathers or a cup of nails.
Good point re: the recipe. I hadn't counted on that differential...
If this works out -- I'll definitely post pics and such. If it doesn't, you'll see me in the Disaster Forum...LOL
Thank you!
