I just accidentally fount this tutorial http://www.cakejournal.com/2007/06/how-to-make-cake-stand-for-cupcakes-or.html
but I was just wondering what you guys think a cake drum is. (I figured I'd get a response faster if I post the question here than if I ask the person on that website). I thought wood would be good, but where does one get wood circles of that thickness? I don't have too many craft stores around, apparently people in brooklyn aren't crafty icon_cry.gif

Michaels & Hobbly lobby sell them in the Wilton aisle. Do you have either of those stores? You can also order on line.

The cake drum is the base that the bottom tier or a cake is placed on. It us usually 2 or 3 pieces of cardboard taped or glued together then covered with paper. Wilton also sells cake drums. I have seen 16" rounds all the way down in size. They come two to a pack. I just picked up some at Michaels
Hope this helps.

Cake drums are actually just several pieces of cardboard circles glued together and then covered in fanci-foil.

If your craft stores doesn't carry them you can order them from Wilton, or you can make your own by buying a package of cardboard circles and glueing 4 or 5 of them together with the lines that run in the middle facing different directions. Then you just cover it in what ever you usually cover your boards in.

Cake drums are more sturdy than your regular cake boards. They are very thick and solid. They come covered in white, silver or gold. Just as Tiggy2 stated, they can be found at your local Michael's store. Here is a link where you can order them off line: http://www.intotheoven.com/Cake-Essentials-Cake-Drums-Round/c46_83_84/index.html

I just saw that site earlier today too! I was thinking about making that cupcake stand next time I take cupcakes to church or something. I thought it would be cute.

oh, I have those! lol, I'm a little dizzy sometimes, I guess I just didn't know what they were called. I made cupcakes for a shower 2 months ago and would've LOVED to have them presented on a stand like that. Next time I definitely will make one.
BTW, her website is great, I'm reading all of her tutorials right now!
