Ok so i have to wire some fondant stars to a cake coming up and i need to know what is the best wire to use for this? i need somthing strong but i still want it to look nice. Any help is greatly appreciated.
24 gauge florist wire, is what I think most use.
Hopefully, someone else will see this and be able to confirm.
Hope this helps,
Holly
It depends on the size of the accents!
The 24 gauge is a good weight for lighter/smaller accents, but if you've got a larger flower or star you may need to go to a 22 or even 20 if the accent is heavy.
oops i bought 18 gauge, and i dont like it. too stiff for me. so i would not recommend that.
i used 20 gage wire that i bought in the craft section at walmart on this cake http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=872213
i tried 26 gage on this http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=93695
just to give you a comparison of the weight that the two will hold. the gumpaste stars i did were very thin (maybe 1/8 - 1/16 inch thick by 1/2 tall) and the crystals on the 20 gage were much heavier. you can still bend the thicker wires, but it takes some playin' around with.
i would suggest that you preshape your wires, and place them inside a straw filled with a small piece of fondant to hold them in place. one time i didnt use a straw and they really tore into the cake as the weight pulled them downwards. the straw keeps them perfectly in place. also , place them in the cake AT the location , not prior to driving the cake somewhere.
