Has anyone tried this. It's ice cream topping. Not knowing anything about dulce de leche I'm not sure if it tastes like it's suppose to. It's very sweet.
I've not tried that one, but here's what I do know about TRUE dulce de leche. It is of hispanic origin, it is basically sweetened condensed milk that is boiled IN THE CAN until the sugars in the milk caramelize. In our stores we are able to buy the Nestle brand "Dulce de Leche" in a can as well as several other varieties in jars and squeeze bottles, but the Nestle brand is what I prefer (I use it as a filling in my cakes). It is sweet, but it shouldn't be overly sweet. It is with the hispanic foods. Hope that helps.
I love the dulce de leche ice cream from Publix but I tried the Smuckers topping and it wasn't even a close second. I thought it was nasty.
I agree about the Nestle brand. I have used it frequently as of late, and everyone has loved it.

Isn't Dulce De Leche just a fancy way or different language of saying caramel???
No, Dulce de Leche is made from milk, Caramel is made from sugar.
Well then- isn't it the same as condensed milk but with a tan/brownish color. I guess that occurs after it is cooked???
OMG - where did you buy this? I've been looking for it forever. I first found it at the 99'cent store and tried it, then went back and bought every last jar on their shelves. When I couldn't find any more I wrote to Smuckers who would sell me a case of about 60 jars but I just couldn't justify keeping that much since I don't bake that often. I wanted to use it for my daughter's wedding cake but couldn't find it anywhere and that was 4 years ago, ug! This stuff is so delicious. I've made several other recipes looking for the same flavor; including the evap milk in a can which I hate. I've made scratch caramel sauce and made it thicker but can't get the right flavor. And, for the person who previously said that caramel is only made with sugar that's not true. A pure caramel candy is made with sugar, cream, butter and vanilla.
