Thank you to everyone who gave me such positive and encouraging feedback while I was whining about how much work this cake was... it was a lot of work because I ended up hand painting every little square and line on it!! But, I am happy with it. I hope you like it, but most of all, I hope customer loses control of bodily functions!!
WOW WOW WOW!!!!!!
it turned out great!!!!!
Good job!!
Amazing!!!
Fabulous!!
Gorgeous!!!!
do I have more words????
No my jaw just dropped!!!!
WOW! It looks flawless! I read your thread on this cake. I have to say you did a great job!!!
Thank you guys!! You can't really see, but the tag inside the neck says, "Retired Guy Fashions, Inc." I thought that was funny because who ever thought of flannel as a 'fashion'?
I can only add more "wow" and "awsome" to the others! This is beautiful, and you painted everybit of it, I am speechless, well...almost.
Great job. Janice
Looks great. What was the shirt made out of and what did you paint with?
Sharp! That's the word to describe it.
and the winner for "highest level of patience by a decorator" goes to ........ (drum roll)..............................
MELVIRA!! for her unbelieveable work on the flannel shirt cake!!
CONGRATS!!!
(and , yes, you can make the longest speech youd like, no music cutting you off, YOU deseve the spotlight!!)
I'd like to thank the Academy... Duncan Hines, without you I'd be skinny... My frosting bags, you always work well under pressure... My cake boards for being so supportive...
Ok, I don't know if it's THAT good! But... here's the lo-down... It's MMF airbrushed red and I mixed black gel color with Rum and painted with a teeny little paint brush. All the details are MMF painted with gel color. The bad part is that I ran out of red spray while the shirt was still a nice shade of pink, and some of you already know, I live in the middle of nowhere, so I had to drive 45 miles to get more. That's ok, I treated myself to a haircut to make it worth the trip! I just feel so good about this cake because for once it turned out almost as good as what I saw in my head. I hate when they fall short of that, but this one is durn close!!
I have a confession to make...
I don't want to give this to the customer. I want to keep it and show it off. But she wants it tomorrow morning. How many places can I go before then? I mean sheesh...

So not only a great and fabulous cake and also clever and funny wit!

Hehehe, she likes me so much she had to tell me twice!
And you think I'M the one gettin' in the rum? hehehehe!
Okay, your "academy speech" is just about the funniest thing EVER! I can't stop laughing...cake boards being "supportive." Heehee!
Your cake is truly amazing!! LOVE all the detail. I'm curious what you charged for something like that. I'm just getting started and have no idea what is a "reasonable" price. With all that work, I hope you got paid well!
Holy Cow! How time consuming was that to keep all the squares and hash marks consistent! More patience than me woman!!!!!!! Excellent!
Amy

Well, a reasonable price for this cake would be about twice what I am charging. See... I got suckered. She asked for a price for a sheet cake, I quoted it, then she dropped the 'flannel shirt bomb as I was walking out the door so I didn't really have time to think about how much work it would be. I quoted it at $30 for just a sheet cake with little decoration, but I am pretty sure I am going to ask for $40. If she has a hissy and says I said I'd do it for $30 I may just say "Ok, well, you asked about a plain sheetcake and this is fondant. I usually charge $40 for fondant sheet cakes, but this ONE time I will do it for $30". I am a little more willing to take the cheaper amount because of two things... this is portfolio gold, and the place she is having the event is at an antique mall during an auction, so there will be literally tons of people there! Advertisement!!
It was a LOT of work trying to keep the lines even, etc. but fortunately this pattern is quite forgiving. It's not perfect, but that's part of what makes it look neat! If it was too straight and perfect it would look less realistic!
Thank you everyone both here and on the photos page for the wonderful comments you are making. You guys know my head is not going to fit in the car to deliver this cake tomorrow if y'all keep it up!! Love you guys!!
Next time you can tell her to call Charm City Cakes for a price quote. That cake is absolutely fabulous!
Yes...can I get me one of those shirt in a 2XLT, please? OH, it IS a cake! Looks really great. Outstanding job!
sorry the double post was the typo i saw as i hit "submit" thought i caught it on time~sorry!
Hee-hee Glenda! That's funny!
RosieCakes... *points and chants* THREAD HOG! THREAD HOG!! J/K!! You didn't bother any of us!
That shirt is too cool!!!! I love it!! You must have had tons of patience to make it that perfect. I hope she pays you the $40 plus a huge tip because you deserve it, girl! Hey, speaking of rum, here's a little gem of a recipe someone sent me a while back.
Christmas Cookies Ingredients
**Read carefully before baking!
1 cup of water
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 cup of brown sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
4 large eggs
1 cup of sugar
1 cup nuts
2 cups dried fruit
1 bottle Jose Cuervo Tequilla
Sample the Cuervo to check quality. Take a large bowl, check the Cuervo again, to be sure it is of the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink. Turn on the electric mixer...Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar...Beat again. At this point it's best to make sure the Cuervo is still OK, try another cup ... just in case. Turn off the mixerer thingy. Break 2 leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit, Pick the frigging fruit off floor... Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers just pry it loose with a drewscriver. Sample the Cuervo to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of salt, or something. Who giveshz a sheet. Check the Jose Cuervo. Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts. Add one table. Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink. Whatever you can find. Greash the oven. Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over. Don't forget to beat off the turner. Finally, throw the bowl through the window, finish the Cose Juervo and make sure to put the stove in the dishwasher. CHERRY MISTMAS!
What an awesome job, I would never have enough patience to attempt this! It is fantastic.
