Do you deliver? If so, what do you charge? I would prefer to not deliver cakes, unless it's necessary for assembly purposes. However, I've been asked about delivering and what the cost is, so I guess I should consider it.
I'm pretty new to decorating, but LOVE it. So I've started a small business from my home.
That is a something I have asked myself lately. Bakeries only deliver cake that need set up. People should expect an extra fee for delivery. IMHO
My thought has always been, if someone wants a cake they go to the store or bakery and buy one. The store doesn't take it to their home. So there should be a delivery charge. I do not charge delivery if it is a wedding cake or if it is in town (I live in a small town)
I do deliver, and my customers really love that I do it. It may really bump up your business if you decide to do it. It's a service that most people/bakeries do not offer, so it can be a very good thing to do. I do free delivery within 10 miles, and then charge at 5-mile increments after that.
Edited to add: I forgot to specify that the above paragraph only applies to my non-wedding cakes. For wedding cakes, I have a delivery/setup fee based on mileage (but even if it's right next door, there's still a fee).
I deliver for $15.00 within 10 miles. Most people hear that and come pick it up! Also, if it is multi-tiered and within 10 miles, I deliver for free for my peace of mind.
