I was wondering if anyone has a recipe for a buttercream that is not so sweet. My Mom loves the icing on store bought (Harris Teeter) cakes because it is not so sweet. It also appears to be lighter in texture. Any ideas? I thought sweet was the purpose of icing!!! icon_lol.gif

Yes, there is a recipe on this site called Whipped Cream ButterCream Icing. It is good and a lot less sweet than the regular kind. Also, if you are looking for something really really less sweet, try the Decorators Buttercream. I did not like it because it was not sweet enough.

Hi this is the recipe that I use. It's still sweet but not sickly sweet and it smooths very nicely with the viva paper towel.

2 lbs icing sugar
1 envelope Dream Whip
2 cups Crisco
1/2 cup Boiling water
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla ( clear )
1 tbsp clear corn syrup
2 tbsp - 1/4 cup flour

* flour acts as a stabilizer

Whip all ingredients together until fluffy.

It's pretty easy and my customers love it. Hope this helps.

Harris Teeter uses Rich's Bettercreme for its icing. It's a non-dairy whipped cream that is fluffy and less sweet than decorator's icing.
