I want to experiment and learn how to decorate with icing using the tips. I can use the basic star or writing tip, but I have literally 100s of tips but don't have any instruction, direction, etc. on how to use them.

Does anyone know any books or websites that show step by step instructions on how to use most of these tips??

Thanks so much,

Lisa

The Wilton Yearbooks and also on their website will list the various tips with pictures of what shape each tip produces.

They have this cool plastic mat kit with alot of the most popular tips and instructions on how to use each one. You slip the sheet under the plastic mat and go for it.....then scoop the icing and you can reuse it. Shows you exactly how to do borders, animals, flowers - all sorts of things.

Plastic "play" sheets are good because it helps you develop some basic piping skills but Doug's idea may be the best one since you get to come up with your own designs and methods for using the tips without conforming to a single predetermined method.

First of all, thanks to ALL of you who responded; great tips (no pun intended)!

This may sound stupid, but Question...when I fill up a disposable bag with icing, the coupler and the tip are both inside the bag; am I missing something??? how do I change the tip without changing the bag????

only the coupler goes inside -- and just the main part, not the little screw on ring.

cut the end of the bag big enough the coupler will stick through only up to the screw threads -- those should be just inside the bag.

then put on a tip

then put the screw ring down over the tip and screw tightly.

ta-dip! and there you are ready to pipe away and change tips.

see this page for diagrams of the process:

I have some tips I virtually NEVER use! I have about 10 each of tip 3 and 18! What's the reasoning behind a tip that is like a half star and then just a little curved bottom? I can only think of using it for a shell border. Does it use less frosting or something? I like the full star for borders because I can keep twisting the bag and not worry about which way the tip is facing.
