thanks everyone...I will keep you posted. Right now, I am committed to doing the demonstrations on Friday 9/14 from 2-6pm, Friday 9/28 from 2-6pm and Saturday 9/29 from 2-6pm. I will be in the New England Center building, although I'm unsure of exactly where.

If I do not have my business formed by then, (as I am getting a little discouraged with my progress) do you think it's still worth it to do this?? what will I gain? I just know someone will ask if I have a business and I'll have to say no!

I'm in RI and am definitely interested in a cake competition. I've been looking around my area and haven't found any fairs or competitions yet...

Kate, It can't hurt to do the demo. At least you will meet people and make some connections. Maybe they will ask you to help organize the competition next year. Personally, I would still hand out cards and tell people that you are in the process of opening your business. Most people don't care if you bake at home or shop...

I'm hoping to have some good luck and maybe make some good connections!! I think I'm too afraid to hand out business cards to people I don't know icon_confused.gif but maybe I will be licensed and ready to go by then, by some miracle icon_biggrin.gif

If people ask, you can tell them "Right now I just do it for fun. I'm working on getting my business up and running. Here let me give you my number and by the time you need a cake, I'll be all set!"

or something like that

Maybe make a card up that says "cake demos" which isn't advertising cakes, it's advertising the demo.

Kate714, would love to attend and see your demonstration. Please send me an e-mail as to the dates and time: [email protected], I'll be sure to pass the info to a few friends and to my Wilton teacher to pass on to her students as i'm sure they would love to see you and look forward to a closer to home competition.

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone! I think I already posted, but for everyone interested, I will be in the New England Center (the building with the Cream Puffs and 4H knitting and other demonstrations). I am committed to being there on 9/14, 9/28 and 9/29 from 2-6 p.m. I hope no one is expecting anything spectacular! I'm just planning to do some simple stuff I feel comfortable doing in front of people, and things that require few tools/ingredients. If you're at the Big E during those times, stop on by and tell me you're from CC!!

Hey Everyone in the New England area!

Just wanted to remind you to visit me at my cake demo table, if you are visiting the Big E this Friday,9/28 or 9/29. I will be in the New England Center from 2-6 p.m. !!! Don't expect an exciting show...just decorating a cake in front of people, and I have to keep it simple because I have to lug everything in myelf. But I would love to see lots of visitors because we want a cake decorating contest for next year!!

If you're at the Big E any of those days/times, stop by and say hi, and tell me you're from CC!!! thumbs_up.gif

I wanted to wish you good luck. I will see if DH wants to go but I think its a good 2 hour drive each way and with a 3 year old and a 1 year old that is a long day. I am entering 26 enteries into the deerfield fair in NH. 3 Decorated cakes the rest yummy goodies.

Does anyone know why the topsfield fair in MA does not do decorated cakes?

Just talked to DH and TOLD him we are going to the Big E! We haven't been since the girls were little. We used to live in Springfield, MA so it was right around the corner. We live in Keene, NH now and haven't been to a fair in years. The local fair isn't anything to brag about.

Can't wait to come and meet fellow CC'ers. Should we wear something to signify we are part of CC? A colored ribbon, a tag with a picture of a cake, etc...

I wish you luck Kate, you will do great! Maybe you could demo gumpaste flowers or cool things you can do w/fondant. icon_smile.gif

There should be a CC pin or something!!! I'm not sure how busy that building is, and I'm not even sure how they'll gauge interest, but the more visitors the better. The Big E folks remind me that people will just be passing through, maybe stopping for a few minutes at max, so I'll keep it simple. Maybe some easy fondant ribbon roses to kill some time icon_biggrin.gif

I would definitely be interested in a cake competition next year at the Big E. That would be so much fun. Never been in any competition before for anything. I used to go to the Big E every year with my Pioneer Girls group from my church in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. I haven't gone to the Big E for a couple years now. I was thinking of going this year though and would love to come see you Kate during your demonstrations. I would love to meet you.

I usually try to avoid the Big E and all the traffic problems...but I'll definetly go this year to lend some support...I'm in Springfield - it is the least I can do for a CCer!! I'm brand new to the decorating world but I'd love to get involved more - if they are looking for any input or organizers for a contest next year, I'd be really interested...let me know!!
Good luck and I agree with wysmommy - you should have something to hand out as an intrim business card!

Count me in! thumbs_up.gif I'm in Gloucester, Massachusetts (40 minutes north of Boston).

harmonhouseofraymond, I heard that topsfield fair is having some baking competions this year (sponsered by Ghirardelli and King Arthur Flour) but I'm not sure about decorated cakes.

I'm certainly not ready to compete as a "real" decorator, but I'd sure be interested in entering a contest in the amature category.

How did the 14th go? What did you end up demoing?

Thank you for following up icon_biggrin.gif

It was fun!! I worked in retail for years but I forget what it's like to work with the public...people are so crazy! I was not allowed to give anything away because of liability reasons, and people were arguing with me about why they couldn't get a "free sample"! Others just walked up, hand outstretched trying to get a cupcake!

I ended up doing cupcakes with BC pointsettias on them, and a cake with different sized circles and cutouts (like my green one in my photos). I took my time...I was there for 4 hours!! I also brought some extra fondant to make ribbon roses but I never had time for those. It was hard to figure out how much to bring.

Next time I'm there (28th and 29th) I'm going to bring a sign-up sheet for those who want info if they do decide to have a contest next year or later. Hopefully there is some interest!

Sounds fun! People are always looking for free stuff - I guess we've become conditioned to want samples when we see food! Make sure you post something on this site about your signup sheet - I think a lot of people would be interested. I'm about as green as they come as far as decorating is concerned but I'd love to get involved more with folks in the know!
I'm hoping to get to the Big E one of the days you're there, but in case I don't - GOOD LUCK!!!
