I tried to bake another scratch cake but man i think i should stick with boxes. I just checked on the cake in the oven and it has a huge crack across the top. Did i do something wrong???? I followed the directions for the recipe but its not turning out. Can someone please help???? I used the better white cake recipe off of here.

Usually with that kind of crack, the oven temp is too hot. Do you have an oven thermometer? They are inexpensive and you can buy one even in grocery stores.

You know I got a great tip form one of Toba Garratt's books, she makes this spackling out of cake crumbs and icing, it works really well as a crumb coat but also for spackling things together, sometimes I have holes or when I'm putting a couple of cakes together to create a different shape etc, it's really handy, I'm sure it would work great for filling in the crack and leaving a smoother surface to work off.

Just an idea. icon_biggrin.gif

No problem, I should have mentioned once spackled stick in the fridge for the icing to harden up gives a relatively nice smooth surface to work on.
