I am trying to get my cake business started. I am planning on putting up some flyers and printing out new business cards. I am considering a name change and I am wondering if I should or not. The current name for my business is Brown Sugar Cupcakery. I picked this name because my last name is Brown and my focus was going to be on cupcakes with various flavors and varities. As I sell my items to co-workers it seems that I am making more cakes then cupcakes, also when I advertise I am worried that people will think that I do not do cakes. These are the new names that I have come up with, I have new names and a variety on the name that I have already chosen.

Brown Sugar Cake Company

The Cake Heiress Cake Company

The Cupcake Heiress Cake Company

I have chosen the Heiress names because I have three little girls and they will hopefully one day inherit my successful business. ( I at least know one of them is interested!!), I also chose the name because I could invision my logo with some type of tiara above it which I think would be cute.
What do you think of these names and my original, do you have any suggestions. Thanks for your help.

Why not "Brown Sugar Bakin'"? That way you don't limit yourself to just cakes and cupcakes.

Well, since you want to keep the word Heiress in the name, how about

The Elusive Heiress Baking Company?

The Elusive Heiress is the name of a Nancy Drew book.

I like the the Brown Sugar (and the name could still be passed to your little Brown daugters, or if they have a diffent last name it is a name of their hertiage that they are keeping)
I would go with something along the name of Brown Sugar Bakery.

Though the tiara idea is cute and very trendy. I would not go with a name that had both cupcake and cake in the title though.

what way do your daughters vote?

What if you just switched to Brown Sugar Cakery... that way you hold the original intention. with the expanded view to cakes, and keep the legacy of your name in there as part of the energy of it.
You can have your cake and eat it too lol!

I definately like the "Brown Sugar" part of the business name. It not only sounds delicious, it's very witty!

I would brainstorm other words that describe aspects of your business to go with Brown Sugar. When I'm trying to come up with new words, I often go to www.dictionary.com and use the thesaurus; that brings up things I hadn't thought about before. Try typing in things like "baker", "bakery", "cake", "confections", etc. and see what comes up.

Aww!! Thanks you guys for your help. I am glad to see that everyone seems to like the Brown Sugar part because the name is very special to me. I was hoping that others would think it was as cute as I did. Although, I really did want a tiara in my logo to secretly symbolize my three little girls. Does anyone have a logo idea that I can use Brown Sugar... and also the tiara. Thanks icon_biggrin.gif

I vote Brown Sugar Bakery (or Cakery), as well.
It definitely rolls off your tongue, and it's not just ho-hum, because your name IS brown! Cakery just seems "upscale" to me, for some reason.

The tiara is definitely cute and catchy, though icon_smile.gif What do your girls think?

I would also keep brown sugar intact. People already have heard that, and you therefore keep that associated link btwn "old" and "new". Although you are not changing your business at all, just broadening your scope of practice, am I right? I would go with Brown Sugar Cakery. People call businesses, I have found, for 3-4 reasons:
1. Word of mouth
2. Advertising/marketing
3. proximity to where they live/work
4. catchy name as they look through the phone book listings.

Brown sugar sounds warm and inviting, without knowing there is a name association (with the proprietresses). When people then see your name, they think you are clever, a plus! I still think you could use a tiara in your fingerprint, many businesses use an image that doesn't necessarily match their product.

Just my $.02

Maybe a round cake with a three point tiara on it...Brown across the band on the tiara and Sugar on the cake and then Cakery (or whatever you decide)under the cake following the round of it....

I also vote for Brown Sugar Cakery. It's easy to remember and easy to spell, etc. It sounds yummy and professional and incorporates your name. For a logo, what about a bowl of brown sugar with a tiara on the bowl? Or, just a cake with a tiara either on top of it or on the cake. Or, for the three girls, a three layer cake with a tiara on each layer.

Good luck,
Carolyn

I love Brown Sugar Cakery myself!

If you use Bakery - people might think you do bread and stuff (maybe you do, though...!)

WOW, that is exactly what I was thinking!!!! Keep the Tiarra, make it w/ 3 points and put the Brown name in the design of the tiarra on a cake. I think it would be really cute!

Your could also use brown sugar cyrstal as the jewels (Ok so it would really be more like raw sugar but I like sticking with brown/topaz jewels.

You've already outgrown the Cupcakery name, it doesn't really make sense to me to limit yourself with a new cakes-only name. I vote for Brown Sugar Bakery (instead of Cakery) or something like that.

I feel just a bit concerned that if you go with bakery will you then receive calls for bread and scones and rolls and danish....if that is within your scope of practice, then bakery would be better. But, if you are not making those things, perhaps you should stick with Cakery. It is most direct for marketing/advertising purposes. If you think you may in the future become interested in more of the bakery items, then.....well, maybe better consider bakery, and realize you may need to field calls for customers that aren't for you.

However, using 'cakes' only may make people think there is some sort of special 'cake' that is made with brown sugar, and since they have never heard of that special kind of cake they may not call you. So, I think 'cakery' may end up being your best choice.

just my opinion though.

Brown Sugar Bakeshop, or Brown Sugar Bake Shoppe (depending on how fancy you want to get). icon_lol.gif

I like Brown Sugar Cake Company or Cakery as well, but it does seem to limit you to cakes, even if you eventually want to move on. However, if you think you will only be doing cakes, cupcakes, and possibly sugar cookies- then it's not a huge problem. I think most people assume that cake bakers do cupcakes and cookies too (these days, anyway).

I just googled "Brown Sugar Bakery" and found one in Chicago and one in Philadelphia; one is a true bakery with pies, cakes, brownies, etc. and the other one is listed as a candy/chocolate/desserts establishment. Don't know what that really has to do with your name, except that "bakery" does indicate a broader range of items you make, while "cakery" keeps it narrowed more to special occasion and specialty cakes, cupcakes, etc.
You may have already thought of this too: You could have a "signature" brown sugar cake (google "Brown Sugar Cake" and you will find tons of recipes like EPICURIOUS'S "Blackberry Brown Sugar Cake", and "Brown Sugar Cake with Butterscotch Glaze" or simply "Brown Sugar Cake"). It could be decorated with a tiara on top (and of course, 3 layers)...

Great idea kc !

Maybe think also on your desire to specialize in cupcakes... use three of them in the logo with the acronym (example: BSC) of the business on the wrappers and circling the cupcakes with a three point tiara.

Lots of possibilities!
