How much do some of you charge for cupcakes? I got my first order & I don't have a clue. I called a supermarket bakery ($5/dozen) & a local bakery ($18-25/dozen). That's a pretty big range. These will be standard sized cupcakes with bc frosting. How much over the actual cost of the ingredients do you charge?
Thanks!

My cupcakes are filled, and are $2.50 each. That is a wedding price. If I take an order for a kids party for an unfilled cupcake (which I rarely do) then I might go $10 /doz.

WOW - I guess I undercharge - I charge 80 cents a piece and $8.00 a dozen for just standard cupcakes with buttercream icing tops.

depends on how your decorating them...just plain with regular buttercream frosting no decorations, i would charge like 10$ / per dozen. i worked in a grocery storey bakery and they charged between 3.29-3.99 for every 6 cupcakes or 150$ each on filled cupcakes. if your decorating them, simple like roses 15$ a dozen (1.25$ each)

don't feel bad! Standard with just icing...$.75.

However, if they are complex or have a fondant heart or stamped design, anywhere between $1.25-$2.50 each.

Wow! Quite the range. What I have been charging is anywhere from $1 - $2.50 per cupcake selling in standard quantities of (24). Again, this depends on the type, if they are filled, what frosting and if I use fondant, etc. I like to sell in quanitites of (24) because then it is a full batch and I don't have any waste or extras to worry about eating icon_smile.gif

They're for a kid's b-day party (Hello Kitty). They won't be filled, just iceed with bc. I haven't decided on the design. I'll have to experiment a bit with different tips. Maybe a simple swirl or flowers and sprinkles of some sort. What is a good icing tip to make the "ice cream" swirl?
Thanks everyone!

Wow! So many different prices. It really does depend on the amount of time you spend on them. A simple buttercream swirl would be less than something fondant covered, etc. I am curious as to what tip to use on the ice cream swirl as well!

I use tip 2D on my cupcakes. One time I made "ice cream cone" cupcakes and I JUST used a coupler. It looked like Dairy Queen!!

I've been selling mine for $1.25 each, a minimum order of one dozen. I will raise my prices on the designs that are a little more time intensive or require more buttercream/decoration (such as the Coming Up Roses design in my gallery).

I charge $15 for a dozen. I make only jumbo cupcakes. I may not be from Texas but I am from Jersey and just like our hairstyles, we like BIG cupcakes. icon_razz.gif

I just made a batch of cupcakes today and used tip 1M to make a flower type decoration on top. It was fairly easy to do if you follow the motions with the hand instead of the arm. (Make the swirling motion with your wrist only don't move your arm.) Also I filled them with the filling tip I believe it's referred to as a Bismark tip (wilton now sells a cupcake decorating set that comes with the filling tip the 1M tip and two others and bags). I was asked by a friend who was on the phone while I was making them how much I would charge for them and I quoted her a price of $1.75 a piece or $21.00 a dozen, because they are filling and decorated with so much icing, the 1M tip applies ALOT of icing lol.

I offer regular non-filled cupcakes with this same type decoration for $1.25 a piece or $15.00 a dozen. If they just want them smoothed no decoration no detail it's still $1.25 a piece... so basically my prices are either $15.00 a dozen or $21.00 a dozen for just butter cream and butter cream filling, if they are filled with a different filling the price is slightly higher at $24.00 a dozen being $2.00 a piece icon_smile.gif

Editted to add: Those prices above are for standard sized cupcakes, I also offer mini cupcakes at $10.00 a dozen or $0.83 cents a piece and Jumbo/Texas sized cupcakes for $27.00 or $2.25 a piece or $33.00 a dozen/$2.75 a piece for filled jumbo cupcakes icon_smile.gif.

I have done "the swirl" before with a 1C, but I have heard others use a 1M. I think it's all a personal preferance.

Does Wilton carry these tips seperately or do you have to purchase the cup cake kit?

[quote="OhMyGoodies"]I just made a batch of cupcakes today and used tip 1M to make a flower type decoration on top. It was fairly easy to do if you follow the motions with the hand instead of the arm.

One of the options that I thought about doing is putting a layer of smooth bc, then adding "drop" flowers (using tip 2D or smaller) to cover the entire top of the cupcake. Is that what you where referring to?

This is what I kind of had in mind:

I use the 1M tip to put swirls on my cupcakes. They sell them separately, I think I paid $1.29 for it at Michaels.

I just sold cupcakes for my first order for my mother in law. I charged her $1 per cupcake, but they had fondant stars and cream cheese icing, so she got off lucky with that price because those darn things were a pain! I would do $1 a piece in the future with just standard cupcakes and buttercream.

Not the drop flowers hun I'm referring to the swirl everyone else is talking about... I call it a flower lol... but really it's just a swirl but when you make the cupcake bouquets they resemble flowers icon_wink.gif

I only have the 2D tip, and that is what I have been using...how much bigger is the 1M tip? I can't find a picture on the wilton site.

It's pretty big... you can't use a coupler with it... well you could use one of those huge mammoth couplers but it's easier to just drop it into the bag and cut the tip off lol. I'd say it's maybe the size of........ I dunno icon_sad.gif maybe someone has a picture of one compaired to another open star tip... mine is dirty or I'd snap on for ya.

Maybe this can help you understand how big it is... Although it says a standard coupler mine would NOT fit onto/into a standard coupler...

That's okay, I finally found it on the wilton site. It is also called the 2110. The two (2D and 1M)are about the same size, the 1M though is a open star tip and the 2D is a drop petal tip. Totally different things. I may have to try the 1M, and perhaps a bigger drop petal one, I like how the one I have is working, but I've never tried the open star one.

Okay, here's the finished product. I used a 1M tip for the swirl & 2D for the drop flowers. I charged $20 for 2 dozen. I think next time, I'll charge at least $1 per cupcake.
Thanks for all your help!

Your drop flowers are lovely! That's one skill I have never mastered. I can do complicated stuff, but I can't make a drop flower to save myself!
