I am making a dog cake and did not like the results with buttercream. I am thinking of using chocolate fondant or modeling clay. I saw a recipe for each on this website has anyone made either of them? Does chocolate clay do well to cover a cake?

Chocolate clay gets very stretchy so it will not be easy covering a cake with it. You can mix 50/50 chocolate clay and fondant.

I buy my fondant premade and if you're considering purchasing chocolate fondant, I recommend Pettinice chocolate (tastes like Tootsie Rolls).
