I'm in Traverse City, where Michaels and Michigan Paper Products are my only choices. However, I'll be in Grand Rapids this weekend and in Owosso in two weeks. I'd especially like to visit some stores anywhere within range of there: Saginaw, Flint, Lansing, Ann Arbor--even Detroit. I've been to Heinrich's in Detroit and it's great, but would like to explore new territory.

Hi Handymama! I am in Grand Haven, I cannot think of good "cake" supply stores in Grand Rapids. There are other "foodie" stores I think. If I come up with any I will let you know. I will watch this to see if anyone tips you off.....

Hi Handymama, I live in Grand Blanc, south of Flint. Besides the usual Michaels stores there is one called Lovegrove's in Swartz Creek. It's also just outside of Filnt. She has a great selection of things and if she doesn't have it she will order it. There is also The Sweet Shoppe in Burton. Beyond that I'm also looking for some supply stores to go to around here.

I am just a little north of Detroit and was wondering what Heinrich's is. I have never heard of it. Where is it located.

Handymama, I didn't know there was a Baker's Nook in Adrian, but I've been to the one in Saline.

It is a small shop, but they have a decent selection and the people who work there are pretty nice.

Hmmm--maybe Baker's Nook is in Saline. I was told Adrain, but that could be wrong. Heinrich's is a non-descript little building in a non-descript little area, but it has quite a good selection, good prices, and knowledgeable people. I believe they also offer classes. I'm not particularly familiar with Detroit, but I think it's in an area known as Center Line. If this doesn't help let me know and I'll dig out my info on it. (BTW, I was there 3 hours when I went and left loaded with bags and a smile.)

Yup, just found out it's in Saline. Worth the drive from Owosso?

I live in Ann Arbor and still mostly shop at Michael's and Sam's Club. Online shopping for other specialty things has been a big help too!

The best store I've ever been to in Michigan (actually the best cake supply store ever) is Baker's Nook in Saline. The absolute best - they have TONS of stuff, the store is bright and clean, the staff is friendly. It is great! Absolutely the best. I live 20 min. away from two other supply stores but I will continue to make the 45 + min. drive to Baker's Nook regularly - definitely worth it.

It definitely has the basics. Lots of candy supplies and Wilton pans. I was disappointed though that there were no "toys" like embossing rollers, crimpers, impression mats....those are the kind of things that I guess I need to order online but, was hoping to get to see "in person" and they didn't have any. I also was hoping to pick up some more Satin Ice (save myself the shipping charges) and they didn't stock it. They did have small (1 lb?) packages of pentice. They had things like the edible pearls and leaf veiners. So, I guess it's all in what you are looking for.
The employee that was there when I was there was friendly but, a bit over friendly. I just wanted to shop around and absorb things. And she kept interupting me to show me other things and ask me questions (kinda felt like I was with my kids ~ lol). Then she asked if I was putting any flowers on my cakes, when I said yes, she tried really hard to convince me not to make them myself and to buy theirs. Theirs were okay, but, I really wanted to make my own. She didn't seem to get that.
Oh well, to each their own....That's just my experience.

hsmomma--sounds like we're looking for the same things. Does Bakers Nook favor Wilton, or do they carry a lot of CK products? Looks like a field trip to Indiana/Ohio may be in my future.

well if you are in the detroit area...there are 2 very good but very different stores that I shop at.

1st is margie's in riverview, mi...they have a ton of stuff. very cute store favor wilton products but have some other things...ton's of nic nac's though

2nd is lorna's in allen park, mi...they focus more on supplies, flavors and that type of stuff. don't favor wilton good to stock up on necessities.

Hope this helps...i know you are not coming to this area, but if you are ever in town, they are worth a visit.

Detroit isn't much different in distance than Saline, and I hadn't heard of these two. Thanks so very much; I think I'll check them out.

There is a small cake store @ 4280 Plainfield NE in Grand Rapids called Cakes Plus. I get my Country Kitchen tubes of colors there. I haven't been there in a while - I sent my husband, he works about 5 miles from there, we live 30-40 miles away - but they had what I needed.

Oh, there are a couple Hobby Lobby's in GR also -one on 28th St. and on Center near Alpine and also one in Jenison. I just spent over $100 there on Wilton items and in their clay art aisle (small impression making items)
I also think there is a cake supply store in Jenison, (SW side of GR) I've heard of it but have never been there.

I live between Brighton & Flint, I go to a place called The Pantry Shelf, 1363 S. Old 23 in Hartland, south of M59. They have a nice selection of product and are trying to expand. Then there is Klever Kreations in Waterford, 3177 Dixie Hwy. They have a good selection of decorating products. I am sure both would order products for you if you need them to.

If you're coming to the Detroit area I use Miles Cake and Candy Supplies in Clinton Township (NE of Detroit). I've only been to a handful of other stores but Miles definately has a far greater selection of supplies than all the other stores I've been to (maybe even combined!) Any ingredient that has been mentioned in forums I've read here can be found there.

Jenisons Candy Cake & Craft Supply House is very small, not worth the trip. There is a very nice store in Muskegon Michigan. Can't think of the name but it is on Seaway drive I believe. I will try to ask around for the name.

I think the store on Seaway Drive is called A Piece of Cake. I have never been there, but know exactly where it is. I did call the owner, she is very helpful.

Just moved from the Detroit area and I used Heinrichs. In a pinch I woud go to Hollies off Grand River and Beech Daly. There was another store in downtown farmington hills and of course i can't think of the name. It was on Farmington rd and grand river.

handymama - How were your trips? What stores were you able to shop in? Did you find anything you needed/wanted?

Just got back moments ago. Went to Klever Kreations in Waterford, Sarahs on John R, Miles Cake and Candy in Clinton township, and Heinrichs on 10 Mile. Heinrichs has the best selection I've seen for both cakes and candy, and the best prices on liquids and ingredients (vanilla, creme bouquet, etc.) since they buy in bulk and bottle their own. They also have a lot of choices in cake boards, packaging, and "plastic doo-dads" for putting on cakes. Each store had a limited selection of items for working with gum paste and fondant, and each offered something that the others did not. Staff at Heinrichs and Miles was terrific.
One thing I really wanted and didn't find was a diamond impression mat. I also was hoping to find instructional videos. Klever Kreations had some for sale that I didn't want, and had the ones I did want for rent only. If you live in that area they're a wonderful resource for that. Miles had a magnificent big roller for doing cornelli impressions in fondant for $100. (They still have it; I don't do nearly enough cakes to justify it even though it was wonderful.)
I'm still thinking I'd just love to make a field trip to Sugarcraft in Hamilton, Ohio. Doesn't make sense at all financially so I'll have to find another justification

Glad to hear you were able to get to a variety of stores. One of these days I'll have to take a field trip to the east side of the state. Sounds like fun.

I've seen that roller online and was amazed at the price too. Good luck in your hunt for the impression mat.
