stayed up last night to 1 a.m. to finish a cake for an order at work - fortunately it wasn't a paid order was doing it for a co-workers birthday - had been planning and working on this cake for a week...it was a total of four 11 x 15s -- two white almond sour cream cakes with almond cream cheese filling made up the saxophone top and two lemon cakes with lemon mousse made up the base...the completed cake stood almost 7 inches tall...

Was tired this morning and dealing with my 4 year old and didn't really think about it - couldn't fit the cake in any boxes or carriers I had - even tried a Rubbermaid big tub - no go - it was too wide -- plus this thing weighed close to 40 pounds...

So, like a fool, I put it on towels topped with no skid topper on my backseat....

You guessed it - was almost to work and someone in front of my slammed on their brakes for no reason -- the whole cake slid into the back of the driver seat and tipped onto the floor -- I pulled over on the freeway and was able to salvage about 3/4s of the sheet cake but the saxophone was obliterated and stuck to the entire back seat of my car...

Never again -- I know to put the cake on the floor -- don't know what I was thinking....oh man....

One good thing - everyone loved the flavor on the sheet cake - and it was gone in minutes at work despite the smashed nature of it...we even put a candle in it for the birthday boy -- so glad it wasn't a paid order...

Thanks for looking...Lisanne

Attached are the pics from last night...boy was I proud of this monster...

I can see why you were so proud . . . I hope the people at work got to see the picture, too, because that is a seriously impressive cake! I love how you did the piano keys around the base with music notes floating around. I am so sorry that the cake did not make it in one piece but at least it served it's purpose . . . everyone ate it and raved about it!

Great job on the cake......but so sorry about your misfortunate accident.
I guess you just know for next time. Just take it as a good learning experience.
I know how you must feel I dropped a decorated cake for my husband's cousin's bday.... but I couldn't salvage it. Thankfully I still had a whole day to make another cake!

Thankfully you were able to salvage some of the cake to eat, it sounded very yummy. icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, you poor thing icon_sad.gif Your heart must have sank when you saw what happened.

I, too, had a blunder a few weeks ago when I had just finished a half sheet cake baptism cake and stuck it in the freezer for a few before taking it to my friend's house. It was a REALLY hot day so I didn't want anything to melt. I was cleaning up in the kitchen, walked by the freezer and totally forgot that I had set the cake in there. The freezer door was ajar because of the size of the cake and I accidentally slammed it shut. Oh, Lord, what have I done, I'm thinking. I was afraid to open the door! Luckily, it just messed up one little corner of the cake and I was able to fix it. Whew.

Oh, the lessons we learn from our mistakes, huh?!

Thanks everybody -- and just so you know I did have a mini breakdown (tears and all) on the side of the freeway after I had salvaged the part that hadn't hit the floor....

but I have to remind myself this is JUST CAKE and life will go on -- my next will be better and I will be more careful in transport!

Off for my second order of the week -- need to create a cupcake tree after the book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom for my daughter's preschool -- going to try something new - Rice Krispie Treats for the coconut tree.....this one only has to go less than a mile...hope it makes it...
