I went to my husband cousin sweet sixteen yesterday and they spent a lot of money, time and energy on making this gorgeous Bday party. She wanted a simple all white three tiers square cake cover with fondant and she had the decorator for the hall decorate the cake with fresh flowers. When I went to see the cake it was a disaster it was crack everywhere and not smooth at all, it look like they try to cover the cracks with some fondant and it look horrible. The decorator try to cover a lot of it but it was impossible to cover everything.
My Husband aunt was very disappointed. I was sorry that I did not offer my services to her but this month its being crazy for me and I'm going on vacation next week with all my family and I being busy getting ready.
I also do this as a hobby and have a very demanding full time job.

You said offer your services - did they not ask you? As family I would think they would have at least asked what you would charge. Oh well - next time they will know better!

I am sorry that the cake didn't turn out well but if they didn't ask you to make it then please don't feel bad. It wasn't your fault.

Oh the poor girl! It's not your fault though, there really wasn't anything you could do about it.

Well you're only one person and there's only so much you can do. Try not to feel guilty. It's just a shame that the person who actually did the cake didn't take any pride in his/her work!

You're welcome. I mean that, too.

I'm actually on the border of Far Hills and Bedminster - right by the Raritan River. We moved here four years ago from Fanwood. How's that for a small world?!

Being family they should have asked you, you did not have to offer your services. My niece had her daughter's (quinceanera) spanish version of sweet 16 but we do at 15 instead and they requested a credit for the cake and I did her cake. Thank god it turned out so beautiful that the people from the hall asked if I can do the cakes from them but they wanted me to sell it to them at a way lower price just so that they can make their $$$$, of course I refused.
don't feel guilty.
ENJOY YOUR VACATION!!

I dont know about the rest of you all but I get insulted when people do not ask me to do the cake. Especially when Im invited to the party and they have a piece of you know what cake. I always put my heart into my cakes and try to personalize them. My cousins boyfreind had a graduation party and I told him I would do his cake and his mom order from somewhere else. My cousin said the cake was not that great. I am doing her cake for today and I cant wait for his family to see it and taste it. I is so cool and I was excited to do it. I will post pics later when completely done. I took me 4 hours last not and will finish later. Alot of piping. When you see this cake it is all about what she has been her whole school life. sorry for babbling. hope you like the cake when its done

It doesn't really INSULT me, but it bothers me just a little to think they didn't think of me.

I'm the same way....makes me wonder if I come off bothered or snotty or something that my own in-laws don't want to ask me. I'm just too sensitive I guess.
