I spent hours decorating a cake over the weekend, delivered it and it looked so nice.

I was sad when they started cutting into it--the end of my relationship with the cake

And then they paid me, and everything was all better...

I guess I'm the opposite, I look forward to it being cut into to enjoy!

It makes me happy to see them enjoy it, rather than just staring at it.

I agree...the first cut is really hard for me. It is better when it is for someone else and I am not there to see it cut into. But then it is back home to start another!!

I might be weird, but ... no. I never get sad when people start cutting into a cake I've done. Of course, I revel in all the ooh's and aah's and compliments when they first see it -- but I truly WANT them to dig into it and enjoy the taste of every last crumb of it, as well. I love to see an empty cake board littered with crumbs and smears of frosting.

Maybe it's different for me because I am an artist. I've done paintings, painted clothing, silk-screening and jewelry. While I took great pleasure in every creation while I was doing it, I soon became bored with each one because it stayed the same. Forever.

I love change. I love the fact that cakes are changeable, transformative art. They get transformed from a static work of art into highly usable energy, tastebud pleasure, and delightful memories with every bite

I don't mind them being cut, but I don't want to do it. I let someone else murder my creations!

Once I have a picture of the cake, I don't care what they do with it. The picture is mine. I also really enjoy getting the ooohs and ahhhs when they actually eat it. I once was told that my cake was the best this person had ever tasted. That comment made my week! You can have a pretty cake, but if it doesn't taste good, what's the point?

When I first started doing cakes, it was really hard. I did a 3D pooh for my son's first birthday, and I just couldn't be the one to give him a lobotomy, so another mom came up and WHACK! There went his head, and the rest was easy. But now that I've been doing them a few years, my attitude has changed and like the others - I look forward to them cutting it (and they're always amazed that it's "actually cake!") and enjoying the taste, cuz then it makes me feel wonderful to hear that it tastes as good as it looks, which isn't always the case with cakes. Sometimes you have to sacrifice one for the other. I find that other people have a hard time cutting it - they don't want to "ruin" it! And I'm like "Get on with it, already!" But I don't say that out loud, I promise. At least I hope I don't. Ha ha.

I agree. It is hard to see them cut into the cake after all the hard work you've put into it... especially the more elaborate ones! Just think though... if you didn't go through that part, you wouldn't get to hear how good the cake is or see them devour it. Which IMO can be just as satisfying as the complements on how it looks.

Once I'm done with the cake and have a picture I don't care what happens to it. I've been known to cut pratice cakes within 5 minutes of finishing them.

Did any of you see that Ace of Cakes where Geoff put so much time and effort into that Jeep - which was an absolutely amazing piece of art, as far as I'm concerned. He finally gets it done, brings it to the groom, who just smashes it without a second thought! I felt so bad for Geoff. He put so much into it and I think he was proud of it - I wish they had least complimented him or thanked him for all his hard work before smashing it to pieces. So that was heartbreaking for me to see, even though it wasn't even my own work!

I too like change. I get tired of things that stay the same. I enjoy the creative process of making a cake, I enjoy the compliments when people see my cakes, but I especially enjoy the pleasure that eating one of my cakes brings to others.

It doesn't usually bother me, though everyone else usually says, Oh your beautiful cake it's ruined. And to that I say...it's meant to be eaten! Be sure you take pictures so you can look back fondly on your work. It's a good way to see how far you've come, too!

Nope! I love it : ) I remember my first cake was a basketweave and it took me a day and half to do it and when I brought it to the party, everyone said "Aren't you upset that we're going to ruin it?"

I was like, heck no! My job is done now so all I was worried about was whether it was nice and moist and if everyone liked it, etc....

I also agree that I am so relieved once it is done and delivered too.

No Kidding. He looked kind of stunned didn't he? Like he was watching a car or jeep wreck in progress... The groom probably had no idea how much thought and work went into putting that cake together.

Yes, I must admit that a tear did well up in my little eye at the sight of that. Poor Geoff.

Well, it is after all CAKE (notice I didn't say just cake ) Anyway..cake is meant to be eaten and enjoyed. The ooohs and aaahhs are very nice when people first see it, But the mmmmmmmmmsss. are better.

I'm never upset about cutting the cake but some of the clients are. The bug cake in my gallery was made for a friend and as I was cutting it she made the comment that she thought she was going to be sick after seeing me take it apart, we got plenty of pictures though.

Yes, it's "just cake," but also a lot of time and effort goes into them, and it's just nice when someone recognizes and thanks the person who did it before tearing it apart. That was why I felt bad for Geoff. Unless the groom did and they just didn't show that part on TV - you know how reality shows are!

I too tend to be a little sad once the cake is cut but only because I think people don't truely appreciate all the hard work I just put into it and start slicing away without a thought. There are those who ooh and awww and that's a wonderful pay off though! Usually people want ME to cut the cake and I tend to get more upset ( quietly, never out loud to them) because I'm a guest at the party, made the cake and now they want me to cut it too? Argh!

Doesn't bother me a bit for my work to be cut. I am relieved when the job is done and am satisfied when I know that they enjoyed the taste as much as the decorations.

I do hate being asked to cut my own cake though, like Kim! I've gotten to where I joke that I can decorate cakes but don't "do" cutting.

I don't get sad when the cake is cut, but I refuse to be the one that cuts it! That is especially true when I attend a wedding and am asked to cut my own creation. It is really hard for me to destroy something that takes so long to construct! However, I will gladly accept a slice to eat when someone else cuts and serves it!

oh i got to chime in again--the first cake i had done in a long long time was the green w/pink ribbon, well I was helping give the bridal shower so i was there-----my MIL came up to me & asked if i was gonna cut the cake or save it for the wedding *&*%^$^*^*^ is what i thought----so i don't care to cut---if u know what i mean

I definately dont care at all.....Actually I sometimes have to make somebody start to cut the cake if Im there because nobody ever wants to be the one to ruin it! It annoys me to death! Im like..." ccut the darn thing and eat up!!"

I hate having my cakes destroyed, b/c i'm enjoying the compliments, but I'm also nervous if it tastes good, so i want somebody to cut it open, and then i hope that it's finished, which it usually is unless i make too big of a cake (i sometimes do)

I think I'm riding the fence on this one.. I DON'T like it when people just tear into it and don't seem to have any respect for it whatsoever (think Geoff and his Jeep cake). It makes me think I could have picked up a box of twinkies and been on my way instead of putting hours into something and having it treated that way.

BUT, I don't like it either when people just won't cut the darn thing at all. I get this weird mix of wondering whether they think it's "too pretty to cut" or whether they don't like it! It drives me crazy!

I made a gingerbread cake for my nieces 2nd birthday, not for the fact that the actual cake caved in before I could get anything on it had anything to do with it but I had spent sometime making all the fish from Finding Nemo to go on the cake. After it was finished it actually looked better as I just stacked the cake back to gether again and it looked a bit like an underwater shelf. When she got her hands on it her mother gave her a fork and she attacked it with a fork most of it enden up on the floor. Yep it hurt especially seeing as thought I had spent the time on the fish just for her. She was only 2 after all.

I love to see the insides of the cake when it's cut! To see how all the layers come out. It's pretty inside too!
