OK, I just watched the show and did I hear right? When he turned down the lady of the "super hero" cake for bouncing the check and not having enough time to make it, did they say $2000 to hold the date for the birthday cake??? $2000 for a Birthday Cake?????? OK, I don't know if it is normal for this guy to get that kind of money for one of his cakes, but a birthday cake?? I would totally understand if it was a wedding but not a birthday (sorry.... I've said the word "birthday" like 20 times, but I'm just in shock) icon_surprised.gificon_eek.gificon_surprised.gificon_eek.gificon_surprised.gif Anybody??? Or is it just me? icon_biggrin.gif

I really thought he said $3000. I almost had a heart attack!!! With charges like that I guess you can afford to be appt only with a storefront. Was it just me or did it seem really kind of mean to make fun of the people that came to the door??? Alright, I know...I can be a little sensitive!! icon_smile.gif

I am sure the fame that he has aquired has gotten to be a bit much. People thinking that they can just come up whenever they please. Also they were looking to buy and made a very rude comment about the time it takes to create a cake.
I catch myself saying things like you are getting a real good deal!

You know Nanettedelong, I agree with you, at least he should've shown his face instead of hidding behind the counter or whatever that was! And I guess you are right, with those prices, he can afford anything!!!

Crazy, but if you can create that kind of demand for yourself, by all means, right? If people will pay the price, can you blame him? He's doing a good job at the whole capitalism thing, I'd say!

Does anybody know what kind of cake recipe he uses. It seems he can make all kinds of shapes and designs with his cake without them sinking, cracking, etc. I would love to have his recipe.

I agree with DianaMarie....If she didn't want him to create the cake, she wouldn't have agreed to pay that kind of cash to begin with. I am sure there are cheaper places to get cake in Baltimore!.....and I was glad that he didn't back down and do it when she offered him all that granite and marble! I probably would have been a pushover and tried to do it.....and from the sketch, it looked pretty huge and involved. I loved the Black and white wedding cake....and the way everyone worked together (I didn't see last week icon_sad.gif ) I also really liked the green and blue whimsical cake with the bubbles that was behind them in some of the talking segments. Really pretty. And I liked his little brother.....okay okay, I liked the whole thing!

Okay you guys........I missed Ace of Cakes tonight so I'll have to stay up until it comes on again at 12:30. I have only watched it once as I swore I would not get addicted to Food Network. Truth being.........I have had a very busy night and forgot to watch it.

I'm already in shock about a $2000 or $3000 birthday cake. I gripe at my daughter for what she spends on birthday parties. Guess I'll have to ease up on her.

When the couple was told the lead time, the man said to the woman,"three (months), that's high quality". Or something close to that. I'm not sure that was meant as a rude comment. I thought it made the man instantly became aware that this guy is in high demand and must be reserved early.

But maybe I misunderstood.

His cakes are really awesome. His prices start at $175 for a special occasion cake that feed 10-12 and wedding cakes begin at $6.00 a serving. His site is www.charmcitycakes.com. I like the show wish it could be an hour long instead of only 1/2 hour. Cheffie icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

Another thing that I noticed was the "slip" by his receptionist--She said, the first time, "The lady who wants the SPIDERMAN cake...." and when she came back with the second message from the woman, she said, " The lady with the SP---SUPERHERO cake...."

OOOOO, shame on you, Duff, making cakes with recognizable licensed characters---what will the copyright police think????? Good thing the cake didn't get made or somebody else might have gotten a big chunk of that $3000!

Kidding aside, that slip could cost a few major bucks if the wrong agency heard about it. That should have been edited out!

I loved the instant fix on the finger mark in the black & white cake--see, it even happens to the big guys!

The man said so how long does it typical order take? and Mary Alice says "3-4 weeks" and the man turned to his wife and said " high quality" I got that he was being a cake snob by MaryAlices reaction and the tone she used when she mimicked his voice--That is why I thought rude.

Finally watched the show at 12:30 a.m. and I still find it hard to believe that people pay this money for cake. I realize the talent there and that it costs to run an operation like that, but what I can't believe is that it is necessary to have $3000 birthday cakes. Guess I was just raised to appreciate the fact my mom could afford a Betty Crocker cake mix and made some frosting to go on it. That, and a freezer of homemade ice cream, was wonderful to my family.

BlakesCakes, I thought the same thing when I heard her say Spiderman cake. How many times to we get warned about copyright? Also loved the way he repaired the finger hole in the cake. I would be afraid to ask what that cake cost.

I enjoyed the Throwdown with Bobby Flay making the wedding cake more than I did Ace of Cakes. He has my same sentiment about fondant! I'll take the buttercream anytime.

I fell asleep half way through lol, oops. It was ok, I think his attitude is starting to get to me though. I missed the cake he did with his brother and I really wanted to see that part lol.

The throwdon with Bobby Flay was good, he did pretty well for a first wedding cake. I didn't like all the inedible stuff he used but it was pretty. Michelle's was OMGosh awesome!!!

Totally agree about his attitude. Pretty stuck on himself. My biggest problem with these shows is that they constantly have their hands all over the cake and their hair hanging down in it. The Health Dept. would never go for that hair hanging down.

As for Bobby Flay, I've never been keen on fresh flowers stuck in the cake. I like them between tiers where they don't actually touch the cake, but the stems stuck in the cake turns my appetite off! For a first cake he did quite well. The judges all said it looked good enough to dive into. I think the fondant looks elegant but not appetizing. JMO icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

The prices people will charge for cakes is what brings them repeat business. If the work is superb, the cake tastes great and the customer is happy, what is the problem? I charge $25 for a 9" fruit tart that I only make during peak fruit seasons and people line up for them.

Personally, I wear latex gloves and a hat when I do my cake work; this leaves nothing to chance for fingerprints, sweaty hands, etc.

Supply creates demand. Now if I could only find a way to justify charging $9 for a cupcake..... icon_lol.gif

I have a friend that got a BIRTHDAY cake for her husband from Charm City Cakes... it was in the shape of a XBox controller. In all reality it probably was an 8 inch round, 4 inch tall cake... it was $450!!! icon_surprised.gif I thought that was a little crazy and the sad thing was... he wouldn't even let us eat it!

Watched the Ace of cakes and Bobby Flays wedding cake challenge last night....interesting!

rE: lATEX. Use caution, I'm a nurse and people can have a fatal reaction from coming in contact with latex if you use gloves for cake decorating, use the vinyl gloves....

I absolutely love the show. I love the fact that he's non-conventional and the dynamics of how his staff works together. I think people would be surprised by how much cakes cost that are made by other "cake celebrities". Hey, if there are people out there willing to pay that much, more power to him!!! I only wish it were me!

I went to the Charm City website and I think he charges $8 per serving for a wedding cake!!!!!

I missed most of the show last night; forgot it was on, I did get to see the final cakes and the guy repair that black and white cake!!! The cake he made with his brother was too cute!!!

Sorry for the mistake. I use Nitril gloves because of the latex caution; I forget sometimes because it feels like latex. thumbs_up.gif

3000 was totally insane...........did you catch the part where the lady said she was kinda in a pinch now and would pay MORE if they could still do the cake????? That woman obviously has nothing better to do with her money LOL. I like the show.........I guess I'm just thrilled that there is a cake decorating show period....I'm not in the viewing area for Wilton's new show! But I do think he comes off as being kind of an ass sometimes! Whenever I saw him on the food network cake challenges I always thought he seemed really sweet and happy all the time, but my opinion changed on the first ace of cakes! Oh well, I guess at least the guy has a hand in each of the cakes he does..........would be even more rediculous if he was charging that and had other people completely making the cakes. It always amazes me how many different people work on each cake, yet once it's finished it's as if one person spent a million hrs. on that one cake.........if nothing else, they do work well together!

I've seen both shows last night. Bobby is one of my favorite chefs. Thought he did great. He's all about taste. Prices of cakes are grazy but people pay anything once you make a name for yourself. Fashion or food there isn't any differants really. I know I don't get paid enough for the work I put in. But one day......? Hope so.

goal4me -- thank you for that heads-up on latex allergies. My dad was deathly allergic to latex.

I tend to be of the old school in re: sanitation issues -- I just wash my hands a LOT while working. Can't stand a layer of latex or vinyl between my hands and what I'm creating. If I get the occasional (very clean) fingerprint on a cake, well ... that's what 'decorations' are for, right? icon_wink.gif
