I am making 40 - 50 individual 2 tier cakes for my best friends wedding shower. She wants one calla lily on each cake. What is the best product to make the flowers out of? Fondant, gum paste????
Thanks icon_smile.gif

You could use either. I just made them recently and used fondant with gum tex mixed in so that it was sturdier to work with and it dries a little quicker than regular fondant. I have also used a mixture of both fondant and gum paste and that worked great. There are actual calla cutters but you can use a heart shaped cutter and make them from that. Hope that helps.

Depends on your skill level. I would use gumpaste if you are good with it, and can work quickly. Fondant is a little bit more forgiving and has a longer drying time. I would say knead together half gumpaste and half fondant, that way it will dry hard enough, and you can still play with it a little bit.

Good luck, and I noticed this is your first post! Welcome to CC!

I made small and large ones out of fondant, but would agree, that gumpaste probably would've been the best. I bet you could use a mixture of half fondant and half gumpaste and it would work out too.

Your flowers are so pretty! I have never made them before and was not aware that you used heart cut outs! It makes me want to try some myself! Thanks for the tip icon_biggrin.gif

I am going to go with the 50/50 gum paste and fondant. How long is this good for once mixed together? How long do you think it will take to dry? I want to be able to mold part of the stem around the seam of the layers then bring the flower up the side and lay at an angle on top. So the flower needs to be somewhat dry, but the stem needs to be moldable. Is this even possible?

Beautiful calla lillies. Another thanks for posting that you can make them with a heart shape cutter. I will definately give that a try.
