I have seen several times on the site that it is illegal to sell the cakes if you don't have a legitimate business. I understand this and struggle with this issue all the time. I just don't haver the space to have a certified kitchen. Word of mouth has REALLY gotten around that I do cakes and I have really been doing a lot of them since last spring. I am always asked if I have cards and I respond that I don't but that my name can be passed along to others who ask. Was curious to know how others handle the whole "legal" business thing. Do any of you still pass out cards with your name on it? Do most have certified kitchens or are you like me and spend a lot of time "under the table" that I use to decorate my cakes?

consider local private school or a church...schools definately and churches usually have certified kitchens you might use.

Hi sweetie,

I started as a home decorator in 1978..word of mouth through family and friends.

It helped subsidize the bills of a single mom!

eventually when I got to the point that I was making a reputation for myself, and wasn't in a commercial kitchen

well, my suggestion to "skirt" around the issue of being reported if you hand out a business card is to get "presentation cards". These are those cards that you see people in old movies placing on the butler's tray or in the hallway..( or new movies..about the past..lol epics I think)

you can go to

www.vistaprint.com

and they have some nice ones, you can get about 250 cards for 5 bucks and change ( this is what you pay for shipping and handling)

you don' t have to put a lot of info on the card...just your name and number will be fine...just so you have something a little professional to hand out.

HTH

well, I personally don't see the difference between presentation cards and business cards, LOL. But that's ok. : )

Not sure what counts as advertising but I would think that business cards/or presentation cards/website, phonebook listing, ad in paper would all count.

But if it was me I would probably hand out a card with just my name and phone number on it. (no business name on it) that way it just seems like it's a personal card....

I currently don't do many cakes right now as my kitchen is tiny and not condusive to it but am moving to Anchorage/Eagle River and want to start a business.

Very interesting in that if I buy a house in Eagle River, they don't enforce out there so there will be no home inspections. (The guy came right out and told me this) So it looks like I will be home free anyway.

He did mention several rec centers that have kitchens for rent. you might check into something like that where you are. Even ifyou rented occasionally and looked legit you could advertise.

That is what a presentation card is...a personal card with just a name and phone number.

Like you said...business card, phone listing and ad count as advertising...
