I have an order for a cupcake cake using 3 dozen cupcakes and I have never made one. The question I have is, does the spaces between the cupackes even though they are very small make the icing look uneven. If anyone has made one and has any tips I would really appreciate any help. Also what is the going rate for a cupcake cake? Thanks in advance for any help!

Here's a link to a tutorial on how to make cupcake cakes: http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/1192813746051689275ZzeIFp

The gaps between cupcakes are very small are covered by icing.

Cupcake cakes are really surprisingly easy - just pretend the gaps aren't there & frost that sucker good. Don't be intimidated; I was shocked at how simple it was! Assuming your frosting is the right consistency, the gaps aren't noticeable at all (either while working or after the cake is decorated). As far as pricing goes, I have no idea! I've only done a couple, one for my own DD and one for a friend I bartered with. Good luck!

Hey doodlebugs,
They are alot of fun to make. I have done several of them, check out my pics. I always use the big icing tip and them smooth it out similar to icing a cake. Then I add the decorations. Always put a little icing on the botom of each cupcake to keep them in place and you shouldn't have a problem. icon_biggrin.gif

Don't be afraid of them, they really are surprisingly easy to do. I have sone several of them (two are in my photos-the snowman and the tiara) Have to admit that on the snowman, my first ever CCC, I used a couple of tiny plastic cups upside down to fill in the gaps and then frosted over them. I was serving the CCC ,so I just lifted them out and got rid of them. The tiara one, I just frosted right over the gaps and you can't see them. Not sure where you are, but here in upstate NY/Mass border I get $1.25/cupcake and that includes any theme decorations that go on top- they are a big hit here- I have other photos still to post but maybe take a look and also check out the tutorial listed in previous post, it is quite helpful.

Oh I love doing these! They are super easy. You want to arrange the cupcakes as close together as you can get them. And when you add your icing on top you will just make it a good layer of buttercream and smooth it out. They take less time to bake and cool than a cake does, and you only have to smooth the icing on the top and not the sides. icon_smile.gif

For the price, I usually charge about a $1 per cupcake. But that is for plain cupcakes with no fillings. If you do fillings then I would charge more.

Here is a picture of one of the cupcake cakes I did before I iced it.

I agree with the others -- they are so easy!! I do, however, make my buttercream slightly stiffer than I usually would to ice a cake.
