Have you tried putting a little bit of crisco on the cutters?

OK - As Barbara said - Try shortening on the cutters. That works well on other cutters I've used on fondant &/or gumpaste.

Good Luck,
LadyMike

I have exactly the same problem! Certain letters are worse than others, I've tried shortening, cornflour, you name it - nothing helps! I don't have that problem with all my other cutters (I have 4 different sets of alphabet cutters in various sizes!).

I don't use the Wilton cutters, but I have had the same problem with the FMM cutters & tappits. What works for me is rolling out the fondant very thinly, then letting it rest for a couple of minutes. Once the surface dries out slightly, then use the cutters. They release much easier. If they do get stuck, you can use the dull side of a skewer or the back end of a paintbrush to release it. Because the fondant surface has dried a bit, you won't see a mark from the skewer.

I find that when you apply shortening or cornstarch, you need to do it both on the cutter and on the rolled paste.

Try lighting greasing your work surface with shortening before rolling the fondant and then grease the cutters too. Also, don't roll out a lot of fondant at a time. One trick that helps too is to wiggle the cutter a little bit once you place it in the fondant to cut. HTH

I agree with Bec (i_heart_pastry) roll the fondant thin and let dry for a few minutes. I was having the sticking problem until I did this by accident because of an interuption.

I also tried the "leave it for a while" method by accident, and had luck. I actually roll my fondant thicker, so that if I have to poke the back of it out, there seemed to be more fondant to absorb the "poke"....and it didn't cause damage to the front side. The E and F are very hard!!

Another way to use them is this: place the cutter- cut side up - and place the fondant ontop of the cutter. With either your finger or a sponge go over the cutter and the fondant will cut smooth and through. It works great for me.

We received the new molds at the WMI meeting last weekend, and although I haven't used mine yet, they showed us how to. They are fabulous! You can use two colours of fondant/gumpaste, or just one, and then you can highlight the letter once it's unmolded with piping gel (the new sparkle gel looks awesome) or just brush them with luster dust.

I can't wait to try them out!

I have had the same problems with those cutters. The only think that I have found to do, is to push them out in one spont then take either my finger or the fondant tools and try to smooth out the dent I made getting them out. But if someone finds a way to do this without so much work--I'd love to know!! icon_lol.gif

Glad to find this thread !!! I made my first fondant cake a couple of weeks ago (in my photos) and did the lettering with those Wilton cutters. I thought I would lose my mind!!!!!!! Crisco ended up helping a bit (liberally greased both the cutter and the surface of the fondant where I was going to use the cutter). Didn't always work so I had to do a lot of extra letters to get enough decent ones but it eventually was okay. Might have to ask DH for those molds for next time...!

I used the new molds recently and I love them!!!

Once you mold them with fondant / gumpaste let them sit for a minute of two, they will be easier to unmold this way.

I also used them with chocolate it worked really well. I poured a little white to outline the middle and filled with dark chocolate. They looked great and tasted great. Everyone was fighting to get a letter on their piece of cake.

i also have the same probs with these cutters, what i always do is just take a toothpick and kind of push the edges until they pop out. It rarely makes them look bad. It is aggravating though! For me though, its better than actually having to write on the cake! hahah

If you ever have a problem with a Wilton product, ask them. They usually get back to you during the business day. They have been extremely helpful when I've asked questions.

I always mix some gumpaste in with the fondant and I think by doing that it kinda is like the leave it alone for a bit, dries out a little faster and out they come. HTH

I have those cutters as well and the same thing happens, I just use a very thin paring knife and push the letters out from the top and that seems to work really well.

Chocolateandpeanutbutter~ I am also a WMI and will be going this month to the seminar, did you find it informative? I have been teaching for almost 8 years and have only been to one of them and it was pretty good. I really just want to meet my supervisor from New York (Tiffany Smith). Thanks for the heads up on the cutters!! Oh, I have used the glitter gel and I LOVE IT!!!!!! AC Moore carries it in all the colors!

I agree, send any comments to Wilton and someone will get back with you quickly.
