For those of you who make and sell cakes out of your homes, do any of you carry an insurance rider? I would like to know if I should do this?
Thanks in advance.

If you have a business, you need liability insurance for your business. I have a catering policy for $2mil through Hartford. It is $500 ayear. There are a few other companies that offer insurance for bakers.

If you search Insurance in the business forum, you will likely find several threads.

I don't think you can get a rider on your homeowners, but check with your agent. I have a separate business liability policy for about $500 a year. Some venues require a certificate of liability ins before you can bring anything into their facility. Your agent will issue these as they are needed. Talk to your agent.

Does this liability include covering injuries while on property as well as any possible injuries from the food?

I don't know if you can just get insurance without a licensed business. I looked into this when I was going to build a commercial kitchen. I could put under my homeowners and need at least a million in liability and all equipment cost.

I am planning to be licensened next year and am already communicating with the Dept of Ag about it... its fairly easy to be licensed in PA (so I've heard) and I just need license from DofA and zoning.

My next step would be insurance and I hope its affordable but I would need liability for both accident and food injury.

I actually live in a parsonage that is on church property so I have to find out if that affects anything as well...I think I will have to get completely different coverage for the business part.

Awww!

Actually it surprised me... I guess it has to do with all the Amish baking that goes on in the center of the state because I'm sure if it were up to the Philly area to make the state laws, it would not be so simple!

I'm not licensed yet so can't talk about "simple" until that happens! icon_biggrin.gif
