see this cake:

now just redo it as fondant figure of friend popping out.

(note use of fondant flaps to get POP effect)

tonight if you want.

since fondant dries slower than gumpaste, starting today would probably be a good idea.

It will need to be done a few days in advance. If you don't have time, you could use a barbie doll that looks like his wife - just be sure your cake is tall enough. Sounds like a fun cake!

should I add the fondant head and then make the body and attach them...and if I do...can I jus attach with icing or would toothpicks be better? icon_redface.gif

I did a cake for a woman turning 60 and her name happened to be Barbie. I guess you can figure out the rest. she was a redhead and so I got the Wilton Barbie, dressed her in fondant and inserted her into the top of the cake with her hands straigt up like she was popping right out!! Since the they only make the red head Barbie in a small pick doll, I made the cake with a 6 inch pan but made it 3 cakes high. I think everyone had a lot of fun with it.

here's a tutor that addresses head and face.

note the body is made separately (first) and then the head attached.

and, if you've ever worked w/ polyclay -- techniques are the same (but ours is edible!)

Debbie Brown has a book. I think its called Naughty cakes. There is a women poppin out of a box. It has great directions You could adjust it to the client.

How about this: Use wife's photo of herself and scan it with edible frosting sheet. Place it on a sugar cookie that you cut out in same shape as the photo. Stick it on the top of the cake. Simple, isn't it?

Good job Doug! Thats the one I saw in the book. The roly poly one. It had great instructions. I like that other one you found too. I was thinking the other person might not be like the roly poly gal.
Im heading that way if I dont stop eatting so much cake. icon_cry.gif I just love cake.
