I've had an order for a wedding cake to feed 300 people - she wants it to be a variety of sponge cakes (carrot cake, chocolate cake etc.) I'm used to making fruit cake and the serving sizes are quite small so I don't know how big or how many tiers would serve 300. Do you guys have any photos or ideas of sizes for cakes to serve that many? This is my biggest wedding order so far so I'm very excited!

I have done two cakes that large. One was cake for my daughter's school aution that was decorated like a waterfall. It was five tiers tall and I used 8", 10", 12", 14", 16" each tier was about four inches tall, all different flavors. The cakes were round.

The second cake was a wedding cake the middle cakes were a 14" square, 12' Petal, and the top was 9" hexagon. The satilite cakes were stacked. 10"square on the bottom and 9" petal.

The serving size depends on what pans you use. You are going to get more servings per pan if you use round or square compared to a petal or hexagon shape.

I hope this helps.

Thank you everyone - she wants round cakes. I have read on this board that the Wilton guide to servings is a bit on the mean side - so is the Earlenes one any better?

Wilton's party serving size is more reasonable. It goes with a 1.5x2 inch piece. A 4 inch high cake with that size would be a decent size serivng.

Industry standard servings for all occasions:

If they want larger servings, they can order more cake.

Definitely use the Wilton's wedding cake guide.  It's the only way you'll make money.  And it provides PLENTY of cake for an after dinner dessert.
