I'm sure this has been asked before but I'm just getting things figured out.
How much do people normally charge per hour for labor?
I spent roughly about 5 hours baking and decorating 120 cupcakes this past weekend for a bridal shower. I'm not sure what I should charge.
Thanks,
Jennifer
I don't know about an hourly charge, but I've read several times that you should charge 3X what it cost you to make.
I'm sure someone else can post if there's a usual hourly rate.

I'd charge no less than $1.25 per cup cake and more depending on how they're decorated. I've just starting charging. What I've done is make a list of all my costs, including boxes, boards, etc. I calculated what it costs me to do a basic cake and then I double it. Example: It costs me appx $13.50 to do a 1/4 sheet. I double that to $27.00 and round up to $30.00 to cover incidentles like parchment bags, tips, coloring, etc. I gleaned my pricing method from reading other posts.
Some people use the cake matrix and I believe it has a per hour charge.
Lets face it, we have talent beyond a hamburger flipper. This should NOT be a minimum wage job! I don't know what the national min wage is but I THINK here in CA it is $7.25... how much better are you than a minimum wage worker? WHY would you work for less than minimum wage? THINK ABOUT IT! Myself, I have a college degree, I definately don't want to be doing less than minimum wage. Anything I do should command more than $10 (boy is that a low number, I really want to say $20, but cakes are not the same as being paid for math expertise I guess).
Thanks for the input. I called a local bakery too. They charge $0.59 a cupcake. I wasn't sure what I was expecting it to be. I plan to call a few other local cake makers and see what they charge. I am by no means a professional. I'm self taught and tend to only bake cakes for friends.
