Does anyone have a recipe for a less sweet buttercream frosting that's easy to make? Thanks.

I've been making dragonwarlord's dreamwhip frosting and have been getting many compliments on it that it is not too sweet. Here it is:

Dream Whip Icing

2lbs or 1 kg bag of confectioners sugar
1 pkg dream whip
1/2 cup boiling water
1/2 tsp salt
2 cups crisco shortening
2 tsp clear vanilla flavouring
1 Tbsp clear corn syrup

Whip up till fluffy. No need for refrigeration but it is fine in the fridge as well. Tastes great, not so sweet and crusts well.

HTH!!!!

I'm sorry!!!!! The recipe I gave you isn't exactly right. icon_redface.gif Also add 2 Tablespoons to 1/4 cup flour. I started adding this after it has mixed a little bit so that it does not get gummy.

Has anyone tried to use 1 cup of butter instead of 1 cup of crisco? Just wondering how it would turn out!

It's a powdered whipped topping mix found in the baking aisle at most grocery stores around here. I don't know if it's more a localized thing or not but I don't think so.

Hi, I love dragonwarlord's recipe. It crusts really nice and smooths well. I made it a couple of nights ago and I experimented by adding 1/2 c of coffee creamer to the hot water and instead of 2 tsp of vanilla I did 1 tsp of butter flavoring, and 1 tsp of vanilla it turned out great and still even less sweeter than before.

Can you decorate with this frosting or is it just for frosting the cake?

Yes, I would also like to know if you can pipe borders with this or make flowers. Thanks!

It's great for decorating with. Just add a little more PS for roses or sweetpeas or other "stiff" flowers.

bbarnes - I added the coffee creamer powder too the other night and have experimented with different flavorings (almond, butter) and it always good and not too sweet.

Oh, and I also love the way this BC smooths - so much easier, I think!!

I made this with 1/2 butter, 1/2 crisco. Turned out soft, but i was able to pipe decorations with it. I had to add a good bit of powdered sugar to make roses though. You can see from the picture that the icing is ivory, but it was exactly what i needed for my color scheme.

I tried the buttercream recipe from the Whimsical Bakehouse book - it's like an Italian Meringue Buttercream. I'm not too fond of it, but it's not very sweet. I must be bizarre b/c I think I prefer a little Crisco in my icing - 1/2 butter 1/2 Crisco. But the Italian Meringue was just kinda "soft" and disappeared quickly in your mouth. I'm trying it on a cake for this weekend, so I'll try to remember to let you know how it tastes with cake.... I just tasted it on its own.
