I'm loving this thread. I agree that there should definetely be a separate gallery for sheet cakes! I get a lot of orders for them. I'm inspired!!!

Personally I like doing sheet cakes. I strive to make them look like nothing you could get at the grocery store. It's not too hard, come to think of it. Sometimes a sheet just fits the bill better than anything else, but I hear ya about people only knowing about sheet cakes. I've steered clients towards and away from them depending on their occassion.

I to have no problem doing sheet cakes. None of mine look like cakes you get in the grocery store. I have done quite a few. There are so many great cakes on here I can't begin to say which are my favorites. Awesome job everyone! thumbs_up.gif

I don't think she meant anything by the cheesy and boring statement. Some bakery cakes that have a border and a few random roses or daps of icing here and there...I think that is what is cheesy and boring!! Sorta been there, seen that, not impressed!!

Personally, I'm glad she started this thread...look at all the great sheet cakes that are getting more exposure. I think anyone should be able to pick up plenty of ideas from these cakes.

I didn't take offense with the statement. I agree that the store cakes ARE very cheesy and boring, not to mention their taste. My opinion of them has changed drastically since I've been doing cakes. But there are still some places that can still do a fairly decent quickie cake.

This is so great! I just saw this thread today and it has taken forever to get through all 7 pages - and I didn't even get to check out ALL the pics - there are so many! I love the idea of a sheetcake gallery. I know I have friends who would prefer a sheetcake, some because it is easier to handle, transport, and cut than stacked cakes. This is such a great way to get inspired!! thumbs_up.gif

I haven't done a search and picked my favs yet, but here's one of the few sheetcakes I would actually post. I was pretty proud of it because I was able to cover the whole thing with fondant, and I hand-painted the fondant ribbon. I was so excited when I was done!! None of my friends or people at the church had ever seen anything like it (though I've seen some way more amazing ones here on CC since then!). icon_biggrin.gif

I've also been guilty of bad-mouthing sheet cakes. I get a lot of requests for them, b/c they're so easy to serve. I'm really getting more enjoyment out of making them now, and find it fun to make them more & more creative. I think these are quicker to make & I make more $ from them.
Thanks for the posting. I've been saving pics like crazy.
Here's one that I saved recently. Hope it hasn't been mentioned.

I started this thread and offended some people by my choice of adjectives on sheet cakes. icon_sad.gif So I just want to say the idea for this thread was to get exactly what's been happening for days. thumbs_up.gif Now 8 pages later, icon_surprised.gif I have totally changed the way I feel about sheet cakes. icon_wink.gif I cannot wait to try one next. icon_twisted.gif
I had only seen a few sheet cakes that blew me off, icon_surprised.gif so I shared the ones I had saved in my favorites because I have only made one sheet cake! icon_redface.gif and was hoping others had seen more that they have saved in their favorites or have done themselves. And it's totally ok for you to think your cakes are awesome thumbs_up.gif I wish I could say the same thing for my sheet cake. thumbsdown.gificon_sad.gif Here's the only sheet cake I have ever made and decorated. icon_smile.gif
It was from cake class and we learned to use an airbrush and kopykake projector it was a lot of fun and loved it cause I painted my cat doing his favorite thing (sitting outside in the sun). icon_cool.gif

I was very happy with the results and how much this thread will help so many. icon_lol.gif I am now always looking for cool sheet cakes now! icon_twisted.gif

You can all laugh at my sheet cake, I think he's funny, although my cat is a green tabby. I still think it's a pretty cute cake, I did not want it cut.

WOW, notjustcake! I like it! I think it's great! I've never used an airbrush, so I envy those of you who have. The closest I've ever come to using anything like that is the Color Mist from Wilton. I love air brushed effects, etc.
I've said it before and I know you all agree - we are our worst critics! There have been SO MANY pictures I didn't take over the past 15 years (some becuz I forgot my camera or didn't have film icon_cry.gif ) becuz I DIDN'T like the cake - this way I could forget I ever made the it!
I can say tho, that after seeing some of the adorable cakes on here, that I might start working with fondant a little more. I love what you all have created with these cakes!!
Good luck with your sheet cakes!!!!!!!!!!!

I also like sheetcakes and I've been mesmerized by the cakes that have been featured in this thread. I'm still such a beginner and I'm working hard so that my cakes don't have that "homemade" look. Two things I notice about all the cakes featured here are that they are all perfectly level and the BC is perfectly smooth. Perhaps those that have been featured here can give us beginners some tips on how to achieve these looks. Thanks so much, I love cake more than ever and look forward to improving my skills.

Let me start by saying, I do mostly sheet cakes. And I do feel that sheet cakes are kind of looked down on by some decorators as inferior. In my area that is what most people want, and it is easiest for me to keep those boards and boxes on hand for orders.

I was proud to even have my name mentioned in this thread (thanks tcturtleshell!) There are some very talented decorators here.

Here are some of my personal faves that I have decorated:
