i work with a girl that requested one and i am trying to figure out what to make. (if she actually is going to place the order AND pay me) the only thing i can think of is the logo. i have never done a FBCT or a chocolate one or edible images (and i don't think i even could do edible images with my printer) so i am pretty much looking at sculpting and carving. any ideas besides the logo?

I found this website that has a really neat face of Jim Morrison. The cake would look so neat if it were shaped like this! It might be hard to do something like this in fondant... but I don't know, I would give it a try.

Sandra80, I made a similar cake. I did an icing plaque of the bands logo and sculpted the lead singer out of gumpaste. (If I did it again I would do the logo as a FBCT and the figure out of MMF, but that's just personal choice. ) The band was Black Label Society and the figure is Zakk Wylde who got his start with Ozzy Osbourne. It's in my pics if you wanna see. icon_smile.gif
People seem to go crazy over sculpted figures.

I can't wait to see what you do with this one!

The photo ktankers posted is very good. You can do it. If somebody carved it out of a pumpkin, you can do it on a cake! But, for something more simple, the Doors logo should be easy enough freehand.

I think it would be great if you did a pier that looks like venice beach. Add some lyrics to songs and poems on the side and maybe a mini Eiffel Tower on the side. Make a "collage" of all his life attributes running along side the pier.

You could also make Whiskey-A-Go-Go and runn lyrics along side from "love me two times", "light my Fire", "Strange Days", etc.

Ooh Ooh, or you could make a big fire cake with the lyrics to "light my fire" wrapping around the cake.

Oh, I wish I had this cake!!!! icon_smile.gif HTH!!!
Please make sure to post a picture when done!!! I can't wait to see it.

you guys are all so much more excited about this than i am. this girl although nice enough, i don't trust to actually pay me so i am dreading making this thing and then her not paying and having to see her at work everyday. the pumpkin thing is what i thought of 1st but i didn't remember i had seen the picture as a pumpkin so i didn't look for it that way and just gave up after not being able to find it. the logo is easier so if i am not going to get paid, at least i won't kill myself making it but doing it the cool way would be so much nicer for my portfolio. hmmmm.....work hard and don't get paid but maybe get paid to do something like it in the future or don't work hard and don't get paid and don't have something cool for the portfolio....decisions decisions.

Go for the portfolio. Plus if nothing more you can say you've done a Doors cake...how freaking cool is that??!! thumbs_up.gif
I know what you are saying about the girl though. I was having a personal training session the other day at my gym, my traniner looks at me and says..."you know Tammy (the gyms owner) is having a birthday in a few weeks". I (playing coy) said "oh really I didn't know that". Then she says to me " well considiring you just about live here like the rest of us would you like to help with the planning of her party?" I said "You bet! I'll bring the ballons!!"...hehehehe...so she doesn't find the humor in that statement and makes me do one extra set of db curls (she is so mean to me).. then proceeds to have the nerve to say to me " Well we were sort of half hoping you'd donate a cake"...ummm WHAT??!!! Why because the gym can't afford to buy a cake??!! PAHLEEZE. I tell ya I almost dropped the dumbbell on my foot.
I said "Well I can't donate one but if you'd like to order one I think we can make that happen"...I hit the gym 6 days a week and so far have not heard another word about the cake or the party icon_twisted.gif
People...jeeze icon_rolleyes.gif can't live with them...to big to stick in the mixer

I did a Robert Smith cake similar to this by painting his face on to a fondant plaque

I'm sure you could do the same with an image like the one posted by ktankers!

Can you ask for the payment, or at least part of it, in advance? Tell her you're a little short on cash and need it to get the ingredients to bake the cake. Maybe that'll get her to fork it over.

For the money part do two things, first get at least half the money in advance and second if she doesn't give you the remainder don't give her the cake. Make sure she knows that the deposit is non refundable and that the cake WILL NOT be handed over until you have the amount due. The grocery store won't let you take the cake with a promise to pay later so why should you?

It sounds like a fun cake to do.

Sandra, have you actually discussed a price and size for the cake? I've read posts on this site before where people have made cakes, delivered them, and never discussed prices with the customer. Then they don't get paid enough. I always tell people my prices for each size right up front. Don't do something wondering if you'll get paid.

yes i discussed prices but she is a dopey girl at work that is all of 17 years old and she thinks she is the only person in the world who knows who jim morrison is and she wants this cake just for her self for no particular reason. i gave her a price and she said she is going to get back to me by the 1st to let me know if she'll be ordering it. i don't think she will, i know what she gets paid and i don't see how she can afford that.
