I have a family reunion coming up that I might be attending. If I do attend, I might do a cake to show off my cake skills. Apparently the last few years, they've been doing themed family reunions (last year was the first time I'd been to in over 5 years). Last year was a mexican themed and they decorated the place with mexican stuff and encouraged people to make mexican dished. I think this year, the theme is Irish. Any suggestions or pics of cakes I could do that would fit this theme? I thought about doing a rainbow with a pot of gold and some green clovers, but thought that might be a little too "St. Patrick's Day". Thanks.
Celtic knots! Would look great on the side of the cake. A harp, fondant sheep, Guiness mug with some froth on top. A fondant Irish flag. I want to see it when you're done!
Celtic knots for sure (my wedding band has a celtic knot design, so I'm biased); clover; the Blarney stone; a map of Ireland; the flag; etc., etc.
You could use and Ogham pattern on the side. It is ancient celtic writing that is now strewn on the original translation rocks all over the Irish countryside. My husband and my wedding bands are ogham and they mean true love always. We honeymooned in Ireland and half of the fun of the trip was driving all over the Irish countryside looking for the stones. I can email you some pics if you would like.
I have a celtic cake in my gallery. I used a cookie mold to make a celtic heart and used a gaelic phrase I found online. Hope it helps!
I am a little more of the opinion to do something more sophisticated, like a black on white celtic knot. There are many images you can find by doing a google search. I do likt the one below. It has a touch of whimsy, but doesn't look like a lucky charms commercial.
Of course, I've had 2 glasses of wine, what do I know???
Thanks for all the suggestions. I saw my mom today and asked her about the reunion. My parents aren't going to go because it's being held at a certain relative's house and my parents aren't happy with them and my brother is also not going. So I guess I won't be going to the family reunion after all; about the only reason I was excited about going to the reunion was so I could show off my cake
Oh well, no biggy. I should be able to do a couple of cakes next month. I want to try my first cupcake cake for my bf's niece's birthday. I think his mother said it was going to be a tea party themed. I'll definately have to make another post for suggestions on that
Oh bugger! Was looking forward to this! Maybe I'll have to do one myself for practice!
How about Oceanspitfire's avatar?
You wanna use my niece's clown wig as an Irish theme? LOL (j./k)- Yeah I know ya meant the Celtic knot.
Weeeeeee a topic I am deeply passionate about (actually I've been called obsessed LOL)
I have probably more sites bookmarked related to Celtic anything than any other topic
I'm in agreement about the classy sophisticated thing- Anytime I see a green hat or clover or pot of gold I think of the Lucky Charms leprechaun dude with his silly voice, sorry
As for ideas, this is just a starting point- there are plenty or irish blessings out there, (yahoo directory> reference >quotations) to find one that suits, (or ask Doug to whip up (pun intended) one of his poems LOL
Also a fave subject of mine: kilts (or maybe men in kilts HAHA), Irish families have their own tartans also - perhaps for a family reunion, incorporating the family tartan colours would be apropos?
