OK - this might not be totally under the sea...(there ARE fish and seashells on the board...) but, maybe everyone could imagine that the surfer dude is just about ready to wipe out, and then he, too, would be "under the sea"..... icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks!!!

Ok, Ok, ok! I am going to be sooo late!!! I have a mermaid that I had to do over and I am waiting for her to dry! Just learning some new techniques for gumpaste and I really wanted to get her right. IF she looks good then I'll be posting my cake on my website for future reference!
I am definitely entering on time for next month though!!!

OK - if you REALLY want to know.... icon_biggrin.gif

Well, the way that I did it....and - I apologize now for the length of the post...

First...I didn't want to "blend" too much! I wanted the streaks....

So, I started with the same teal blue that you see the fish "swimming" in and used that to ice where the water would be.

Next, I piped thick white bc between the sand and the "water". Then, I pulled my knife through the icing from the white "foam" to the edge of the cake - I just touched the teal blue ever so slightly - just enough to pick up the white and teal onto my knife so they mixed a bit and the white streaked through the water color - like real "foam" in the surf.

Then, I took royal blue and added it to white butter cream. I put the slightest bit on my knife, and pulled it through using the same technique.

I then layered a bit of VERY LIGHT willow green bc using this technique.

I didn't blend the colors - I wanted the streaks...

I then covered all of this with clear piping gel.

THEN, I added blue color to the piping gel and ran streaks through the frosting for a final deepening of the color....

Here is my contribution to this month's theme. This is my daughter's sweet sixteen luau cake. The 10 inch layer was white with raspberry filling. The 8 inch layer is white with pineapple, coconut, and macadamia nut filling. The 6 inch layer was white with strawberry filling. I used turquoise colored buttercream with chocolate shells, sea stars, and coral. I had fun doing this cake and everyone said I did a wonderful job. My head is swelling!!!!

thanks! i am really proud of this one! it's confetti cake, covered in fondant. the bottom layer is filled with strawberry cheesecake filling, and the middle and top layers are chocolate 'pudding' filling. the flowers and palm trees are gumpaste and the shells are fondant.

i just have to figure out how to get it to stop leaning and why the fondant cracked (i think i might put another layer on that makes waves).

LOL!!! that is soo funny! LOL!!! I'll tell ya a story!!!

When me and my husband got married I was sooo mad about our cakes!! (plural) didn't realize I was obsessed with cakes back then. But, he was in Korea for the military and apparently he had talked to his Mom about getting this Filipino Mango Cake. He had told me about it and I thought he meant something like an upside down pineapple cake!?? Well, when it came time for the wedding his mother brought in the GAUDIEST 2 tiered, white whipped bc with green and blue borders and flowers that was a white cake with mango filling!! I was shocked!!!! I was upset!! She was trying to upstage MY cake and couldn't let her son go!!! Soooo, when it came time for cake I was still a little upset even though we kept it out and (we have a picture) I held up this huge knife and screamed "WHO WANTS CAKE?!!" Yes, we got a picture of it!!! I see it now and I was BRIDEZILLA!!! It is still soo funny to me now! Cause I wasn't trying to stab anyone! I just held up the knife kind of crazily, not thinking!!! LOL ha haha

So yeah!!! don't mess with Steph!!!
Thanks Melvira for bringing back a good memory! Hope you guys enjoyed it!
