How did he make the Frito Lay cake???? Mike is truly AMAZING!!!
That's an excellent question. I fould his site a few years ago (which hasn't changed since) and could not figure out how he did the Frito Lays cake. I would love to see if anyone out there knows how. Especialy how he has the "shine" on the bag.
Are you sure the shine isnt just an illusion? It looks like a piece of white gum paste or something. I know you can use spray lacquer to make things shiny. It would have taken a few cans to give it that gloss look. I've use it on my #24 car on the windshield to make it look like glass.
I agree with the illusion on the shiny Frito bag....Please tell me more about this spray laquer for the windshield that you made. Did you cover the cake in fondant, then spray just the windshield area?
Details, details ...please.

I just checked out you photo of the 24 car. Awesome cake. Where did you get the pan? and Edible lacquer? Where did you get that?
Would love to know.
Thanks! I made it for my sister and you know she wouldnt cut it! She's a big Jeff Gordon fanatic.
You can get the Nascar pans at sugarcraft.com. They have limited amounts. They also have some of them that you can get with the logos and stuff but they didnt have it for #24.
The edible lacquer I got at Chef Rubber.com
I emailed Mike to see what he used on it but so far he hasnt replied.
did anyone else see him on the food network challenge for cartoon cakes? He made this huge scooby and shaggy in a sarcophagus (sp?) with scooby all wrapped like a mummy. It was un-real!! Also, he did it in SIX HOURS!!!!!!!! Mike is pretty darn amazing.
I've used confectioners glaze several times now. It's what they coat jordan almonds and hard shelled candies with. It is awesome. It is glossy and shiny, and if I were to take a guess. I would say that is what he uses. I might even say maybe an edible image and glaze. I know that I have seen him use and talk about glaze before. I live right up the road from his shop. Maybe I should do some recon.
There is NO ONE that can sculp chocolate the way Mike can! Just NO ONE! I so enjoy watching him in competitions. He is always smiling and seems to be pretty laid back about things.
Did anyone see the Ace of Cakes episode where he helped Duff do a "blow up" cake for a late night talk show? At least I THINK it was Ace of Cakes....it may have been a Food TV episode.
Beth in KY
Yah, I saw the cartoon cake challenge. It was pretty amazing.
Yes, it was Aces of Cakes that showed when Duff went on Jay Leno.
I wouldnt mind working for either one of them. Their both really talented.
It could be a confectionary glaze. I use it for leaves and stuff for my gumpaste flowers. But the lacquer would of been easier just to spray the cake with. I've never used c.g. on a cake before. Do you brush it on?
yes, the confection glaze, you just brush it on. I think the laquer would be easier to spray. I've never used it.
Yah, it is pretty easy to use. Just like the stuff you put on craft projects but edible.
Yah, I think they are basically the same thing, just better delivering system. If you've used cg before, you know that you can pretty much kiss you brush goodbye!
Yah, been there! Its probably the same stuff like you said. Kind of looks the same. Too bad they dont make the spray bottles that you can add it yourself. Maybe a spritzer bottle? But I guess you would have to be careful of drips, etc. Might work! Would be a hell of a lot cheaper too!
ruly is an amazing artist!! And I can't believe how low his prices are...considering his exceptional talent!! I wish I could order a cake for myself for my birthday!!
Goodness, you are right, his prices are quite reasonable. He is incredibly talented and makes such beautiful cakes. I think he charges less for his cakes than many of the people here do and tell others to charge! Granted, there are some talented decorators here too, but still.
Hey! They wrote me back! This is what Laura in his shop replied to the question about the Frito-Lay bag:
Hi Kimberly,
Thank you for your interest! The secret to the Frito Bag looking so
realistic,
is Mike sculpts the "bag" from cake and then hallows out a space to put
the "fritos" made from modelling chocolate. He then uses a piece of
clear
acetate to create the window in the bag and frames that off with more
modelling
chocolate to create the bag front.
Just to let you know, Mike is currently in the process of producing an
instructional DVD on making and using modelling chocolate scheduled to
be out
this Fall.....keep checking the website if this is somehing you would
be
interested in.
Thanks again!
Laura
