I need to do a cake with ivory colored icing. I have run out of ivory coloring and the closest place to get that is about a 2 hour drive. Could I use a very small amout of brown color to get the same effect?

I usually use just a touch of brown in mine, and maybe a little yellow if I get too much brown. I know it sounds weird, but I just play with it till I get the color I want.

Thanks Nicole, and "hi" Rhondie. That is what my grandma used to call me all the time. Nice to meet both of you!

You could try using a little regular vanilla extract instead of clear.

The regular vanilla is a great idea! I will try it, Tks! You can also use a little more butter/margarine and less crisco.

I've found I get a very good and true Ivory but just taking a some instant coffee and mixing it with a little bit of water and then adding that into my buttercream or fondant.

I also just use regular vanilla extract too and then you wont need any dye.

Does the instant coffee affect the taste of the bc?

it will affect the taste a little...well it really depends on how much you use and if its mixed with vanilla.

Most of the time it will take on a mild esspresso taste.

I bet the expresso flavor would be very good on a chocolate cake!

Another thought would be to add a little cocoa instead of the coffee, same way (with the water like Hula_girl said)
