OK--I've never done this before, but I have a grad/bday cake for tomorrow. It's a square--2 layer--2 tier. I plan on writing Happy Grad on one side and Happy bday on the other.

Do you write before you do anything else?

Do you tilt the cake or just bring it to eye level?

Is it easier to print or use script?

Do you draw your letters on first? (I usually just free hand write.)

Any other tricks I should know about? I'm using burgandy icing on white bc, so I'm a bit concerned that I'm not really going to get a second chance at this. As it's a "paid gig", I would really like it to be as perfect as possible.

TIA!!

Lisa

I would draw the letters first, then trace them out with your icing. I find that to be easier. Good Luck!

How about cutting the letters from fondant or candy clay? That's what I did on my Harley cake using the Wilton letter cutters.

If you look in my photos, the WES going away cake has writing on the sides. I had the cake at eye level and wrote right on it.

I did a bday cake that had numbers and shapes along the 4 sides of a half sheet. I just propped up the cake and winged it. If I was getting paid, I probably would have blocked out the letters in the icing first. I didn't find it to be that difficult. You just have to adjust your grip.
Good Luck.
