My family is having a reunion of sorts this weekend (immediate family all getting together with all of the babies). I am going to make a fun cake representing all of the little ones and I need help with flavors.

My mom requested a chocolate cake as that is her favorite. My dad complains whenever anything chocolate comes near his plate (he eats it, mind you, but complains). The only way to satisfy both would be to do a double layer cake, half being chocolate and the other half being different. With so many recipes on this site, can anyone help narrow it down and suggest flavor combinations? Which scratch chocolate cakes do you swear by and what would you make as an alternate layer? This will be frosted with buttercream but any filling suggestions that might meld well with both the chocolate and the other flavor would be appreciated!

any suggestions?

(I'm excited . . . this is my first bump. I sure hope it means what I think it means!)

How about making a 2-tier cake, each with their own flavor? If you don't need too much cake, you can make it 2"+filling. I've also made a 1/2 sheet cake using 1/4 sheet chocolate and 1/4 sheet white and just put them together.

Sorry, no recipes for scratch cakes. I usually use a doctored cake mix. I'm sure there are many good ones on this site or you can also try allrecipes.com

I use the Magnolia chocolate buttermilk recipie. It's very dense, but not as moist as I like so I brush it with a simply syrup.

For the other half maybe a good butter cake??..

Thank you for the suggestions. Tiering the cakes sounds intriguing, but i've not gotten brave enough to stack or tier cakes yet. I know it will be something that once i do, I'll realize I should have done it long ago but right now the fear factor weighs heavy. Also, with the design I've got for the cake, it may not work with a tiered design. I have had a layer cake in mind throughout the design process (i.e. when I can't sleep at night because I'm thinking of the dozens of variations I could do with my cake!)

Do you think having a layer cake with two different flavor layers would be too much? I don't want the flavors to compete for those who will actually eat the whole piece of cake.
