Happy Father's Day to all the dad's out there! Well...I made a "breast" cake for my father (per my mother's request!!) and thank god I presented it to him last night. I put it back in the oven where I'd been storing it (3 small children in my house); I removed the "Cake in oven" note I'd put on the oven door. WHY?!?!
I got up this morning to make my hubby a superman cake and preheated the oven..went down in the basement to mix up my cake mix, didn't want to wake the rest of the family up. All of the sudden the smoke detector goes off. I"m like, "Hmm..that's odd..oh SH*T!!!*. I raced up and removed said cake from the oven. The cellophane melted and the fondant "skin" started to droop. I felt terrible. Besides the fact that this cake was a tremendous amount of work..scratch cake, ganache, new buttercream recipe..I felt so bad that my dad wouldn't have a cake to eat. I then made a box mix for him and used the leftover ganache and buttercream to frost it. Man, I felt like an idiot! Hopefully, this is the only time I"ll ever do it. Sheesh!

Thanks for the sympathy guys. Thanksfully I did get pictures yesterday..(they're in the naughty gallery). My parents took the cake home and are going to cut into it and tell me what it looks like inside after being baked!!

What a day! Thank god it was only a cake for a family member icon_smile.gif

Cindy,

I am so sorry about your cake!!!! I leave notes for myself all over the kitchen. I have more work than storage space, so sometimes I have to get creative with stashing layers for the next day. The one time I don't leave myself a note...
Yesterday, I preheated the oven in the morning to get a jump on the day's baking, when after, fortunately, just 3 or 4 minutes, I remembered my 14" wedding cake layer (frosted with buttercream) was in there! (That was a long sentence!) Disaster averted. Note to self... keep writing self notes.

Oh my gosh!!! I'm not alone. I just did that. Baked 48 cupcakes and put them on cakeboard and stored them in the oven so I could ice them the next day. Turned on the oven the next day to bake cookies. My nose told me something was very wrong and I ran to the oven. Thankfully what I was smelling was the board and the cupcakes had not yet been harmed. Had I been in the basement (we don't have those in California icon_razz.gif ) all would have been lost. You're not alone!

Add my name to the list of those who turned an oven on with a finished cake hiding in there!!
The cake itself wasn't ruined but the icing melted and when it cooled was smooth as glass and crunchy, crispy!! LOL

LOL...You know...that's how different things are invented. You can add that to your frosting options...buttercream, fondant, or glassy crispy crunchy!

Thanks guys, you have definitely made me feel better. I'm glad I'm not alone! Quick update..my dad took the cake home to show my brother and I also wanted him to cut into it to see what it looked like. He cut it and it was fine and tasted delicious. Alls well that ends well, I guess!
