I have made some doctored cake recipes where butter is substituted for oil, but I was wondering if this could always be done?

Last night I improvised a beer cake using DH triple chocolate cake mix, beer in lieu of water, 4 eggs, and 2/3 cup softened (not melted) butter. Seemed to come out just fine and a scrap tasted good. Finished result is for Father's Day, so we'll find out for sure then!
