cook a cake on a stove top?

Hey everyone ..

I haven't been posting here in a while -- life is way more than hectic lately -- but a student of mine had a question that i can't find the answer to!

She wants to bake a cake for her cousin's birthday this week, but her mom's oven has died!

Can she make a cake on a stove top? One of her relatives swears that she has heard of this before!

Any help -- directions -- etc -- is greatly appreciated!

I doubt you could do a regular cake. Cake needs even allover heat.
There's probably some recipe out there for a skillet cake, but it would be a different kind of dessert.
Can she use someone else's oven?

I actually saw a woman do this on a bake-off that was on the Food Network a few weeks ago. She took the batter and steamed it like you would steam dumplings. It was quite interesting.

I saw this recently in the foodnetwork channel. It was for a cake challenge. The lady who did it got the recipe from a chinese cook book. She said it was traditional for her IL's. so she thought i'd be nice for her to make it for them. Anyways, It was done over stove top. Boiling water underneath method. Sorry I forget what that's called. And it cooked, it's just not the same texture and taste. At least that's what one of the judges on the show said.

Ooops! never mind. It still needs to be baked.

I guess I should have read it through first!

There's also a cake that you can do on a campfire. Maybe it's using the same concept? They use a cast iron dutch oven with the lid.

You can definately bake a cake in a crock-pot. Here is a link:
