i have to make 2 wedding cakes for my former boss this week and i really have no clue on what to charge. she wants 2 10" cakes... the first one: white cake with BC frosting and white roses, the second with marble cake, BC frosting and pink & white roses... i'm going to make the roses out of royal icing cuz i like how hard they get compared to BC... i'm just starting out, these are actually the third cakes i'll be selling... i was thinking $25 for each but that's a total of $50 and i know she could've gotten a sheet cake for much cheaper in the store... anyone have any suggestions on price?

My 10" cakes run for $45.00. Do not compare yourself to the grocery stores!!!

I sell my 10" cakes for $45-50. Perhaps I am just a slow decorator icon_rolleyes.gif , but that really only pays me about $7 an hour after paying for ingredients, boxes, delivery, etc....Make sure your price pays you enough for your time.

My 10" 2-layer round cakes start at $50. You are not providing a mass-produced store cake. You are spending time and money lovingly creating individual cakes specifically for this lady - your time, skill and expense must be compensated for. If she wanted a sheet cake, she'd have got one! Don't undersell yourself!!!

I agree, $25 is really low for a 10" cake...It comes out to about .62/slice. That is way too low!!! I would say at least $40 a cake.

I agree with the others $25 is way too low, remember you have to make all those roses they take time. I think it should be more in the $50 range

Hi guys:
I agree with you guys. I, myself, have been undercharging and I realized that if these people wanted a cheaper cake they know were to go and purchase them. They obviously want a special cake made with TLC.

On that subject, I just made a terrible mistake this past weekend. I made a 1/2 sheet cake with a 2-10" round cake on top and another cake of the shape of an army helmet (total of 3 cakes). My theme was the army. I posted the cake before, if you want to see it. I only charge the lady $50.00 icon_redface.gif and she came back saying that I must make her another cake. I told her that I made a mistake by undercharging her that I wasn't going to be able to make it for that price again. I don't know if she will come back but like you guys have said, I must take charge of my cake decorating. I am not as good as most of you but I have to start validating my little talent (whatever little amount I have) somehow becasue that will motivate me to do better in the future.

I love cake decorating and would like to do it for a living when I retire in two years. Part time that is. icon_lol.gif
