When I do any type of character cake I usually outline with black bc icing. Can I use piping gel colored black to acheive the same thing or would that look funny?

Sorry for dumb question, when you don't take classes you just don't know these things icon_sad.gif

Hey, sounds like a good question to me, but I don't know the answer either!

I think for sure it would help the flow of the icing to add some gel to it, (the recipe I have says 1//2 tsp gel to one cup of thin consistency BCI to produce smoother writing, printing, and pointed leaf tips). Wouldn't hurt to mix some in a little icing and give it a try! Janice

I do a lot of character/drawing cakes. I buy the tubes of black icing that you find at the supermarkets and empty it in a plastic container with a little bit of BC and mix it thoroughly. Then add a tiny bit of black (wilton) coloring. Most of the times, it has to be thinned down a little with either Karo syrup or just water. You can also do the same thing when you need to use dark colors that leave a bitter after taste like red, dark blue, dark green, etc. HTH!!!

Hi momof3jotynjake!

I guess you did it the right way. I always mix them with my own BC as I find it tastier/more delicious that the store bought one. But it's a matter of preference. When I started cake decorating, had big problems achieving dark colors - especially black and red. Once I tried those tube colors I can achieve deep colors without the bitter taste. Sometimes, I mix them with piping gel specially for incriptions and pearls. thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

I have a Nemo that I'm making out of the 1st & ten pan and putting that ontop of another pan as the they want a shaped Nemo but it won't be enough for 20. And, I'm doing a Strawberry Shortcake.

Tonight I want to try to make chocolate seashells for Nemo and chocolate transfers of strawberries for the shortcake.

You'll do great on the wedding cake! We are our own worst critics (yeah, I try to tell myself that on every cake I make) icon_lol.gif
