DD is getting married in July and wants me to make her cake. Luckily she wants a very simple smooth iced 3 tier cake. Problem is, I haven't decorated a cake in 15 years and even then it was the Wilton character pans AND it's a mere 8 hour drive to where the wedding is. Am I crazy to think I can do this? Any suggestions if I do?
TIA!

NO you are not crazy, but what is scary is the 8 hour drive.
Is the weather warm or cold where you are, or where the wedding is gonna be ? Make something that is on the "sturdy" side. If she's not specific, maybe make pound cakes w/ royal icing. Add the decoration when you get there. I suggest fresh flowers, since it's been 15 years since you have not decorated. Just put a simple border around the cake (buttom). Like round beads using round tip. If you have time to practice, then explore a more elaborate one. Good luck.. icon_smile.gif

No you are not crazy. you could add ribbon around the bottom, it's beautiful & hides lots of flaws if you are a little rusty.

I did a wedding cake that was all just dots. It was very simple and easy to do. (in my pics) you don't need any special talents to pull that one off at all.....and it really is an elegant cake. (the one in my pics is the trial run - the actual one was 3 tiers) I didn't go and "push" the tips of the dots down on the trial run one, but I did on the actual cake. The two-tiered heart cake is another one that was very simple to do also. (and I did push the tips down on that one!!) icon_wink.gif

Are you crazy? Not at all. If you could do the character pans - you can do tier cake icon_smile.gif. I still gnash my teeth when I face a shaped cake icon_smile.gif. And how special that will be to have you do the cake!!!!

Thank you all so much for the encouragement. Everyone around me thinks I'm nuts for wanting to try it, MIL, SILs, co-workers. I really really appreciate the encouragement here!

It will be very hot there, West Texas, and yes we will be putting fresh flowers on it. So you think if I make it here the weekend before it will travel ok? Not sure she will like a pound cake type, but I will certainly mention it. Do you think MMF will be a good option? She definitely doesn't want regular fondant, so I'm thinking of trying out the MMF when she is home for little brothers HS graduation.

I did think about putting ribbon around it! Great minds!!! It's definitely an option.

Again, thank you so much!
