I made a practice cake last night for one of these cakes, and didn't get the blue anywhere close. Does anyone have any ideas on which color/colors to use to get this shade of blue?

Wilton has a garden color set with a blue that looks similar to that.

My first thought would be cornflower blue (wiltons) with just a dab of black. I would have to experiment though.

It kinda looks like a periwinkle or something to me.

My first thought would be to make a light purple shade & then very lightly add touches of blue to it until you got this color.

GOOD LUCK!

I guess I'll have to experiment like someone else said. The color last night was nowhere close. I'm using mmf for this cake...any ideas how many batches I'll need? I really think this cake is ugly, and hated every minute of the practice cake, but the bride loved the pic that I emailed her!

the shape of those cakes, looks like a headache to me LOL Good Luck with that one!!! I'm sure you'll do fine I've seen your work..............but man that cake looks like it would be a pain to cover in fondant!!

Actually KHalstead, she wants round tiers, not stacked, and polka dots about the size of quarters instead of the flowers. I'm hating every minute of this one. I wouldn't be doing it if it weren't for my sister.

Before you start mixing colors, I would try the Delphinium blue from Wilton's garden tone set. I don't think you can buy it separately, at least not that I have found. I have the set and haven't used that color yet, but it looks to me like it's the one that was used.

Here's the link, take a look:

Like Sherri said above-it looks like a cornflower color. OR I would say a gray color but with a touch of a very light blue color. I would say!

Good luck! ~Josie icon_smile.gif

Where did you find it separately? All I wanted from that set was the blue and the green and I could only find the juniper green separately. I looked in Michael's, AC Moore and 2 cake decorating supply shops. I ended up returning the green and buying the set. I'm sure I"ll use the other colors eventually....

Jenn 1977, I would try either delphinium or cornflower and see if you can get close enough. I hate to mix colors unless it's for a small area because I know I will end up needing more and never be able to match it again!

Good luck! Sorry you hate the cake you have to make...

The delphinium looks almost exactly like the color I need. Thanks! Now to see if I can find it anywhere!

I'm not an expert on cake, but I do paint quite a bit. If the Wilson colors don't work that were mentioned here, add a blue, a bit of purple (a little at a time) and some black. I think that would come pretty close to that color. Good luck!

I don't mind it, just not for a wedding. It does look much more cartooney though not stacked because the decorations are on the entire cake. It's just really busy to me, and not very much like a wedding cake. I guess it's just not what I really had in mind as my first wedding cake. The cake is for my sister. She eloped 3 1/2 years ago, and lived in Germany, so it's a renewal ceremony since they didn't have a real wedding.

OK, now I'm starting to scare myself. I took one look at that cake and said "Delphinium Blue". I think this cake decorating thing really is a sickness!
