Ok...I just got 4 orders for cupcake cakes. They were the result of a cake I did as a favor to a friend. I have NO idea what to charge. For my other cakes, I charge what comes out to be about $1.00 per serving. Is that too much for a cupcake cake or not enough?

A cupcake bakery that opened up in our town charges $2.25 per cupcake - $24 if you buy a dozen.

A dollar hardly seems too much.

Last night in "Unwrapped" - Food Network Show, there is a cupcake store/bar in LA that charges $3.75 / cup cake..but the reason is that all the ingredients are imported and the best there is. They use the most expensive Vanilla from Madagascar and Chocolate sprinkles from France, so forth adn so on. But people were buying them likecrazy.. Yur price does not sound too much. It sounds ok. icon_smile.gif $$$

I don't know where you're located but the bakery here in GA I used to work at charged $1.25 for one cupcake with a rose on it. How many cupcakes would be in your cupcake cakes? I would say $24 is very reasonable! (for one cake).

No way. I dont think you are charging enough depending on the decorations and the size of the baking cup that you are using. I made and sold cupcakes at a craft show in Dec and was only charging a $1.25 a cupcake by 2hours into the show I had almost completely sold out and the lady at the table next to mine said. You sold those way too cheap. I should have sold them for at least $2.00 you shouldn't undercut yourself, you put a lot of time into baking and I'm sure it's worth it.

I don't think it is enough, I start at $1.75 - most bakeries around here start at $2.50

Also, I think the supermarket by us (Vons) charges $2 per cupcake.

I am not sure on the decorations for 3 of them but one is to be in the shape of a centipede. they all are to serve between 20-25. They haven't gotten back to me on whether they want them filled or not. Thank you for your help. I think I will go with $1 per cupcake and go up depending if they want them filled and the decorations? Thanks again. I don't know what I would do without this site! icon_biggrin.gif

Ok.. I don't type fast enough and my son keeps asking me questions!! It sounds as if 1.25 may be more appropriate. This is tough. I have a good referral base of customers but I don't want to start charging too much and lose them!

I think a lot depends on the decorations. I charged only .75 each for the elephant cupcakes in my photos and man did I undercharge. I told the lady if anyone ask that I charge 1.50 to 2.00 a cupcake. They were like decorating 24 little cakes.

I work at a bakery and we start at a $1 per cupcake and go up from there depending on the decorations. Around here (SW MO) that's a good rate and we could actually probably get a little more, but I would just get a feel for it and see what you can do. Maybe call around to your local bakeries and "fish" for what they are charging. You may be able to get more than you think.

You don't want to under cut yourself, it is a lot of work and effort. Also remember by selling cheap you send the message to many folks that it's not as good. Prices do vary by region. At least check what the local supermarket charges and charge a bit more. Because even without tasting yours, I'd bet they are a lot better than the ones from the market.

BJ, your cakes are beautiful!

I did a cupcake cake for a friend, and only charged $1 a cupcake as a favor, so I think don't undercut yourself too much. THey chose you because they liked what you did; its way better than what they can go to walmart and get, and if that is the price they want, then let them go to walmart, and get what they pay for.

I use a pastry bag and one of the round tips probably 10 or 12. I used 230 once. It has a long "nose" on it. Didn't like it at all. You can also use a melon-baller if your so inclined. I As you fill the cupcake you may see it expand a little. The frosting will cover the hole. Practice on one or 2 and then cut them to see if you have enough filling.

Oh Me, Oh My, Why would you give them away. I don't know where you live but here in L.A. (aka. La La Land). People charge pretty close to 3 bucks a pop. So come on now, at least hovering around $2. If youstart off cheap you can never lower your price. Rethink this.

Even the grocery store here charges $8.00 for 12 cupcakes which is like 66 cents each so I think $1 might even be a little low. I am sure yours are much better then these!!!!

I wanted to buy "Naked" cupcakes from a local grocery bakery so my Girl Scout troop could learn to decorate on them. I just wanted un-iced, plain white cupcakes and the grocery bakery wanted to charge me $17 for 24 plain cupcakes = .71 cents each. I didn't want to bake 102 cupcakes, but at the price they wanted to charge, it was worth my time to bake them so each girl would get 6 cupcakes to practice on. It would have been $73 for them to do it, or .88 for each box of mix I needed.
So your price would well be worth it.

I use the #12 tip to fill but I really want to get a bismark tip. The kids go crazy for the cream-filled cupcakes! I've had an order every week for those since I started making them!

Don't under price, it is harder to raise the prices than it is to lower them.

Keep yourself in a position to be able to give a "deal".

Re: filling the cupcake - how big a hole do you cut? What shape? What do you use? Do you fill them with BC then continue on to decorate the top from there? Hope my questions are clear. TIA.

walmart charges 2.50 for six cupcakes. I just started out and was trying to make my prices similar . Yet I found that I was spending more to make the cupcakes then I was charging for them. Could someone tell me a little more about the cupcake that is being price for 1$ each and more. I worked in a bakery about 10 years ago and we were charging 69c for the clown cup cakes back then. Can anyone also give me some ideals on doing differnt cupcakes along with the prices for them

If you are filling them and creating flowers or animals on it I would charge at least $2 per cupcake.

ok ...around october time i would have said yes.... i went to walmart and saw that they had a dz for 5.00 so what did i do stupidly charge 5.00 a dozen.....as the time went on and my husband was home more because he was on leave before deploying .....he nudged me to charge 3.00 a cupcake......after making 400.00 in 10minutes I was like wow that way better than .50.....the next week i decided that since i was on that 400.00 dollar high i would charge 4.00 at a school event.....again gone!!!!!! That was last week....and yesterday i just got a call from one of the ladies that bought one of my cupcakes and she asked if i could make 70 more for june.......so i agree with the last post.....when its sounds crazy just do it! at the very least you wont sell have to sell 500 cupcakes to make it what you could have made in 80-10 cupcakes......

no thats not enough... decoration will effect the price but its gotta be more than what you mentioned.

In re: irisinbloom question about paper liners peeling away.... oh this is so annoying it happens to me too... I have asked and asked and asked why and no one can tell me the definite answer.

Recently some suggestions were made to me.

1. fill the paper case more with batter, so that they will rise over the top edge of the paper case.

2. Cook less, as an overcooked cake shrinks and in a cupcake it would shrink away from the paper.

3. If using a tray for your paper cases to sit in, use a heavier based tray/pan.

4. Don't handle the cooked cupcake too much when decorating.

I (silly me) tried all the suggestions in one go... so have no idea which worked so I do all of the above every time I make cupcakes now...
