I have been suckered into doing an Alex the Lion cake for a little friend of my daughter. I reckon I can cope with the face but I'm not sure where to start with the mane - anyone got any ideas?

Oh yeah! I'm not sure who "Alex the Lion" is (guess my 5 yr old son didn't discover that one) but you could use your grass tip and a few different shades of golden yellows, yellows, and copper (Wilton) for the darker parts. With the grass tip, I'd start at the face with the darkest color and pull straight lines out from around the whole head. Second I'd use the medium shade over top of that and lastly the lightest shades on top of that! You could also double fill your pastry bag with two shades, side by side, of icing and pipe. Dont' forget to upload your cake pic's when you're done!!
Hope that makes sense to you and helps a bit!!

I would use either tip #16 with pull-outs or tip #233 blending lighter and darker shades.

Good luck.

I'm not sure if this is the look you're going for but I made a cake with a puppy on it and used tip 14 for the hair. You could use any star tip and use different shades of gold and brown. I just layered strips to make it look a bit shaggy and 3D.

Hope this Helps!

Pic too big. I'll add to my photos!

J9,
I would use the 233tip. You really do get the hair
effect from it! Or any smaller tips, stars, straight
lines just about anything!

I'd use the grass tip 233, pulling quite long strands out! Ellyrae - Alex the lion is the lion in Madagascar!

I'd use either a star or grass tip too. I made fringe for a purse cake using the grass tip and it looked a lot like a lion's mane. I built up the area first by piping around the area using just a couple and then went over that with the grass/pull-out fur tip.

I went to the gallery and did a search under lion, there are several nice ideas you could use. There is a really nice lion with full mane on the second page.

I agree the 233 grass tip would be the way to go.
