How do you make "sand" for island, desert, beach, etc. cakes?

grind up some plain gram crackers in the food processor or blender. You could also use brown sugar.

Try using crumbled cookies or brown sugar, or a combo of both!

You can use raw sugar found in the sugar isle. It is coarse and not bleached. We use it for everything. Taste great.

(hmmm wonder what a combo of crushed graham crakers, crushed vanilla wafers and both light and dark brown sugar would look like??? -- oh goody another excuse to experiment)

I like the way you think Doug! I was heading in the same direction...have a cake to do in June that could involve a beach scene...hmm

I like to make sand using the vanilla oreo cookies. Not only do they taste fantastic but the cream in the center makes the crumbs stick together a little just like sand on the beach. give it a try, and try not to eat all of the crumbs before you put them on the cake.

I agree with cupcakes. I just did a golf theme cake and used the vanilla oreo cookies for the sand traps. Everyone commented on how "real" the sand looked. I just crushed the cookies up in a chopper till they wouldn't chop anymore. They do taste great on the cake too.

I did a beach cake (as seen in my photos) and I used crushed Nilla Wafers. They worked great and tasted super!
