Fondant...how To On Anything Associated With It!

Hi,
I have seen all of the beautiful cakes here that are made with fondant. I was only able to take the Wilton Course 1 so I don't know anything about fondant. My instructor for that class kind of turned me off to it since she said it tasted so horrible. I have an idea that she has only experienced the Wilton rolled fondant though. I have been really interested in this since hearing so much about the MMF so I made a batch today. This sure was fun to knead so I can only imagine how fun it is to decorate with and it really does taste good! I have so many questions. The recipe I made says it covers one 2 layer 2x8 cake. I know by reading that you have to roll it out but other than that I don't even know where to start. Why do you have to ice the cake w BC first? How many batches do you make to do 1 cake? Any info here would be so helpful or if anyone has or knows of a DVD/VHS that I can buy that has demonstrations I would love you forever. In that case...any instructional videos on any cake decorating techniques would be greatly appreciated. I am one who learns best by seeing and doing rather than reading . TIA everyone!

If you look under articles there is a tutorial on mmf how to make and use. I started there it is very helpful. hth
Sorry! I don't know why I didn't look there. I searched under forums and there were so many that I wan't finding what I needed. Sorry again but thanks for the help!

I'm not positive, but I believe that Wilton sell videos of demonstrations, or at least they used to. Go to Wilton.com and see if they have videos for you to order.
go to www.nicholaslodge.com for video or dvd tutorials. they are awesome and pretty cheap compared to others.
Hi there!
I am an instructor for cake decorating classes. I cover the cake in buttercream, not crumb coat but fully base ice the cake. Two reasons, Most people don't like the taste or texture of fondant, so if you fully base ice it, they can peel the fondant back and they can still enjoy the cake. Secondly, if you don't have any buttercream on the cake, the fondant will turn hard. Not enjoyable.
Here's how to figure out how much to roll out. You take the diameter of the cake, 8" and if it is 4" tall you add that twice, so you have 16" circle that you will need to cover the cake.
Let me know if you have any other questions. I just love all of this cake stuff.

Thanks for the hlep Dawn! I sitll have not been able tp "play" with my fondant. I have it sealed in a airtight bag and am hoping when i do get back to it on Monday (possibly) it will still be good. I hear rumors that there may be a craft store opening in my area soon so hlepfully they will offer the Wilton courses. I also just bought some videos off of ebay so maybe this ding dong can learn a few more things. Thanks again to every one for the help!
